Do UK residents need a visa for Austria?

It depends on your passport, not your UK address. British, Irish and EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Austria. Most other UK residents, for example Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Chinese or South African nationals living here on a work, study, family or settled status, need a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa and can apply from the UK.

The UK centres serve people with a valid UK residence permit. If you are in the UK on a visitor visa, VFS says you need to apply from your country of residence instead (applying on a UK visitor visa).

An Austria-issued visa is normally valid in all 29 Schengen states, so side trips to Munich, Prague or Budapest are covered; it does not cover Cyprus or Ireland. ETIAS, the €20 authorisation for visa-exempt travellers such as British citizens, still has no launch date and never replaces a visa. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so expect fingerprints and a facial image at your first Schengen border crossing, for example at Vienna airport (EES and ETIAS explained).

You prove your UK status with a UKVI eVisa share code, not a BRP; see our eVisa share code guide. Apply to Austria only if it is your main destination (which country to apply to).

Austria visa appointments in the UK

The embassy says all tourist and business visa applications must be lodged with VFS Global, which has centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Unlike Germany, Spain or Portugal, Austria lists no regional split: the embassy names all three centres without assigning parts of the UK to them, and the Embassy of Austria in London decides every file.

Centre Address listed by the embassy Who decides Extra time
London 66 Wilson Street, London EC2A 2BT Embassy of Austria, London None
Manchester 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH Embassy of Austria, London A few days (file sent to London)
Edinburgh 1 Rennie’s Isle, Edinburgh-Leith EH6 6QT Embassy of Austria, London A few days (file sent to London)

Always confirm the address and opening hours on the VFS Austria UK site and your booking confirmation before you travel, as VFS centres do move. The embassy itself, at 18 Belgrave Mews West, London SW1X 8HU, does not take short-stay visa applications over the counter; it handles national D visas and residence permits by appointment arranged by e-mail only, and says it has very few of those appointments. VFS collects your documents, fingerprints and fees; it plays no part in the decision.

London

London is the shortest route to the embassy and suits London, the South East and East Anglia. Expect demand to be highest before the Christmas markets, February half-term and the summer holidays.

Manchester

Manchester is usually the practical choice for the North West, Yorkshire, the Midlands, North Wales and the North East, and worth checking when London has nothing suitable. Your file and passport travel to the embassy in London and back, so allow a few extra days on top of the decision time, and check on the VFS site how your passport will be returned.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh suits Scotland, the far north of England and, by flight, Northern Ireland. The same extra transport time to London applies.

How to book

  1. Complete the Schengen application form first, electronically, so your passport details and travel dates are fixed. VFS says handwritten forms are not accepted.
  2. Create a VFS Global account for Austria UK in your own name, and add each family member as a separate applicant.
  3. Choose the centre and visa category (short-stay tourism, family visit or business).
  4. Pick a date and time from the calendar. If nothing suits, check the other two centres and check back regularly, as cancelled slots reappear on the calendar.
  5. Print the confirmation and bring it on the day.

Important: The appointment is always booked in your own name on the official VFS Global system, and booking it is free. Any optional paid extras VFS offers are listed on its Austria UK site; they do not affect the embassy’s decision. Schengen Visa Support does not book, hold or supply appointments. We explain how the system works and help you complete the booking correctly in your name.

Availability tends to be tightest from late October to mid-December (Christmas markets and the start of the ski season), in late January and February (ski half-terms) and from May to August (summer holidays and the Salzburg Festival). Book as soon as your dates are firm. Our Schengen appointment guide covers rescheduling, with city guides for London, Manchester and Edinburgh.

On the day

Every applicant, including children, attends in person on their booked date. Arrive shortly before your slot, not hours early, and check your confirmation for security rules and who may accompany you. Staff check your file and copies, take your fingerprints (not from children under 12, or anyone who gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months), take the visa fee and service fee, and keep your passport. If your photo does not meet the rules, you may be asked to take a new one at the centre.

Austria visa document checklist for UK residents

The embassy decides on paper, so your file must tell one consistent story: who you are, why you are going, who pays and why you will return to the UK. The interactive checklist below lists every item; this section explains what each must show.

Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, be valid at least 3 months beyond the visa you request and have two blank pages. Your eVisa share code and status printout must show UK permission running at least one month beyond the day you leave the Schengen area; the embassy sets this one-month rule, which is shorter than some other countries’ requirement. Insurance must cover at least €30,000, including repatriation, in every Schengen state for every day of the trip. The embassy also requires winter sports cover for travel between November and April, so for a ski holiday choose a policy that explicitly covers winter sports. Its checklist still says the policy must include Covid-19 cover, and VFS’s Austria UK guidance adds that only policies from UK or Europe-based insurers are accepted, so check the wording before you buy (travel insurance guide).

Bring originals plus one photocopy of each supporting document, and copies of any Schengen visas from the last 3 years. English documents do not need translating; the embassy says documents in other languages must be translated into German if it asks for this, so check with the embassy or the VFS checklist before your appointment. Accommodation should cover every night, including any nights in Munich, Prague or Budapest on a multi-country trip, and the dates on your form, bookings and insurance should match to the day.

Employed

A recent, signed employer letter on headed paper (VFS says less than 10 days old) giving your job title, start date, salary and approved leave for the whole trip, signed by a named person with contact details and the company’s UK registration number (employer letter guide). Your last 3 payslips should match the salary credits on your statements.

Self-employed

The embassy asks for a recent letter from your accountant, bank or solicitor, plus a letter from the tax authorities, such as your latest HMRC SA302 and tax year overview. A Companies House record and 3 months of business statements alongside your personal ones help show the business is active (self-employed guide).

Students

A letter from your school or university dated within the last 10 days, showing your type of study, weekly hours and attendance, plus your own funds or a parent’s sponsorship letter with their statements, passport copy and your birth certificate. Check your student permission runs well past your return (students guide).

Retired

Pension statements or award letters, with bank statements showing the pension arriving and any savings you rely on.

Austria’s own sponsorship tool is the EVE (Elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung). A host in Austria who agrees to cover your costs files it free of charge, in person, at the regional police directorate (Landespolizeidirektion) for their main residence, with their ID, registration certificate (Meldezettel), lease or land register extract and income evidence, plus a copy of your passport data page and your full UK address. You can apply no earlier than 48 hours later, quoting the eight-digit ID number they receive; the embassy retrieves the declaration electronically. If you pay your own way and simply stay with family or friends, the embassy asks for a signed invitation letter, a copy of the host’s passport (and residence permit if applicable) and their Austrian registration certificate. A UK-based sponsor, such as a spouse or parent, provides a letter, their bank statements, a passport copy and a marriage or birth certificate (invitation and sponsor letters).

Children

A full birth certificate naming both parents (the embassy may ask for a German translation if it is not in English), the form signed by both parents, both parents’ passports with copies, and signed consent from any parent not travelling with a certified copy of their passport, or proof of sole custody or a residence order. Children under 6 pay no visa fee (children’s guide).

How much money do you need for an Austria visa?

The Embassy of Austria in London gives no fixed daily amount or minimum bank balance in its UK guidance. It asks you to show sufficient funds for the stay and the return, so the question is whether your funds plausibly cover this particular trip.

The embassy wants UK bank statements for the last 3 months in your name, showing your current address, with a balance no more than a week old; online printouts are accepted, but cash is not accepted as proof of funds. Beyond that, what matters is the pattern: regular income arriving, a balance that does not fall to zero before payday, and enough left after rent and bills to cover flights, accommodation and spending. A high-season ski week with lift passes and equipment hire costs more than a city break, and your evidence should reflect that. A large deposit shortly before applying invites questions unless you explain and evidence it.

If you cannot show enough funds yourself, a host in Austria can cover your costs with an EVE. Daily figures quoted on third-party websites are not official. Our bank statements guide explains what consulates look for.

Austria visa fees from the UK

The visa fee is the standard Schengen €90 for adults, paid in pounds at the current exchange rate, preferably by card. VFS adds its own service fee per application, and any optional extras cost more again.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Visa fee, adult (12+) €90, in pounds at the current exchange rate Collected by VFS for the Austrian Embassy At the appointment
Visa fee, child 6-11 €45 Collected by VFS for the Austrian Embassy As above
Visa fee, child under 6 Free Not applicable Not applicable
Visa fee, eligible family member of a non-Austrian EU/EEA or Swiss citizen Free Not applicable Not applicable
VFS service fee Set by VFS per application; check the current amount on the VFS Austria UK site VFS Global At the appointment
Optional extras Varies; listed on the VFS site VFS Global Only if you choose them
Our admin support fee Quoted separately, see pricing Schengen Visa Support Only if you use our service

The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused, and optional extras do not speed up the embassy’s decision. VFS’s Austria UK information page says fees are paid by debit or credit card, with cash accepted in London only and no cheques or bank transfers; confirm the payment options on the live VFS site before your appointment. Our Schengen visa fee guide covers exemptions and refunds in more detail.

How long does an Austria visa take from the UK?

Under the EU Visa Code, the decision is due within 15 calendar days of a complete application being lodged, extendable to 45 in individual cases that need further scrutiny; the embassy says its usual processing time is around 15 days. Applications lodged in Manchester or Edinburgh take a few days longer because the file has to reach the embassy in London.

Some nationalities are subject to prior consultation with other Schengen states, which can push a decision towards the upper limit, as can peak-season volumes before Christmas and the summer.

When What to do
6 months before travel Earliest you can apply; book your appointment once dates are firm
3 months before Ideal time to book for December, February half-term or July-August trips; ask any Austrian host to start the EVE
6-8 weeks before Latest comfortable point to book; have your documents ready
2-3 weeks before your appointment Generate your share code and get the employer letter dated
15 calendar days before Legal latest date to lodge the application; risky in peak season
After the appointment Allow 15 days, up to 45, plus a few days from Manchester or Edinburgh

More detail is in our processing time guide.

Austria visa types for UK residents

Almost every UK applicant needs a short-stay Schengen C visa, valid for up to 90 days in any 180, with evidence tailored to the purpose. All are lodged through VFS.

  • Tourist: city breaks in Vienna and Salzburg, the Christmas markets, lakes and Alpine summers, and ski holidays in Tyrol, Salzburgerland and the Arlberg. Hotel or chalet bookings for every night and an itinerary are enough; no invitation is needed.
  • Visiting family or friends: a signed invitation letter, a copy of your host’s passport (and residence permit if applicable) and their Austrian registration certificate, or an EVE ID number if they are paying. Staying with them also covers your accommodation evidence (family visit guide).
  • Business: an invitation from the Austrian company or organisation on letterhead, naming you, the dates, the purpose and who pays, with a letter from your UK employer. For conferences and trade fairs in Vienna or Salzburg, add your registration or exhibitor confirmation (business visa guide).
  • Cultural, sports or official visits: confirmation from the festival, orchestra, club or ministry hosting you.
  • Family member of an EU/EEA citizen: a facilitated, free visa with an accelerated procedure if you travel with or join a non-Austrian EU, EEA or Swiss family member; bring their passport with a copy and your marriage or birth certificate (documents issued outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland need legalisation or an apostille).
  • Airport transit: only for nationalities that need one to change planes at an Austrian airport, such as Vienna, without passing through passport control. VFS’s Austria UK page lists nationalities such as Nigerian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Iranian and Iraqi as still needing one even with a UK residence permit; check the embassy’s airport transit page for the current list.

Students on a UK student visa apply as tourists, with their enrolment letter. Frequent travellers with a good Schengen history may be given longer, multiple-entry visas (multiple-entry rules). Stays over 90 days, such as seasonal work or a long study course, need an Austrian national D visa or residence permit, which follow different rules; the embassy handles these by appointment arranged by e-mail, except work-related visas (C and D “Erwerb”), which also go through VFS.

Tourist

Holidays, city breaks, Christmas markets, ski trips and touring Austria and other Schengen states, up to 90 days in any 180.

Visiting family or friends

Staying with relatives or friends in Austria, supported by an invitation and, where the host covers your costs, an EVE ID number.

Business

Meetings, trade fairs, conferences and training, supported by an invitation from the Austrian organisation and a letter from your UK employer.

Cultural, sports or official visit

Concerts, festivals, competitions and official delegations, supported by an invitation from the organiser in Austria.

Family member of an EU/EEA citizen

Facilitated, accelerated visa for family members travelling with or joining a non-Austrian EU, EEA or Swiss national; no visa fee.

Airport transit

Only for certain nationalities changing planes at an Austrian airport, such as Vienna, without passing through passport control.

Austria-specific tips

Most Austria-specific problems for UK applicants come from the EVE, split itineraries, ski trips and the embassy’s written queries.

  • Start the EVE early. Your host must file it in person at the police directorate, and you cannot apply until 48 hours later. Send them your passport copy and UK address as soon as dates are fixed, and check the spelling and passport number they enter.
  • Count nights on Alpine and Central European trips. Munich arrivals and Vienna-Prague-Budapest routes mean nights are often split; the country with the most nights is the right one, not the first airport.
  • Show ski trips properly. Include the airport transfer, the resort accommodation and insurance with winter sports cover, which the embassy requires for trips between November and April. A ski package booked through a UK tour operator is good evidence of accommodation and return travel.
  • Answer any embassy letter fast. If the embassy has concerns, it sends a written statement before refusing and gives you 7 days to reply. Correspondence with the embassy must be in German.
  • Do not visit the embassy to apply. Short-stay files go through VFS; the embassy sees visa applicants only by appointment arranged by e-mail, and only for national D visas and residence permits.

Why Austria visas are refused (and how to avoid it)

Most Austrian refusals come from documents that do not support the trip as described, not from missing paperwork.

  • Unclear purpose: a thin itinerary, or a family visit with no invitation or host ID.
  • Insufficient or unexplained funds: a balance too low for an Austrian ski week or city break, or a large recent deposit with no explanation.
  • Doubts about your return: UK permission ending soon after the trip, or an employer letter without approved leave.
  • Wrong country: more nights in Germany, Czech Republic or Hungary than in Austria.
  • Sponsor problems: an EVE quoted before 48 hours had passed, or details that do not match your passport.
  • Insurance below the rule: less than €30,000 cover, a policy not valid in every Schengen state, or no winter sports cover for a November to April trip.

The refusal notice is issued in German and states the grounds and how to challenge it. Under Austrian law (VwGVG section 7 and FPG section 11a) you can lodge a written complaint (Beschwerde) within four weeks of the decision being served, attaching every document you submitted with a German translation; new facts or evidence cannot be added and there is no hearing. The notice states where to send it and the deadline, and the Embassy of Austria in London may first reconsider the case before it goes to the Federal Administrative Court (Bundesverwaltungsgericht). The deadline is applied strictly. Alternatively, reapply with a file that answers each ground, which lets you add new evidence. Our refused Schengen visa guide compares both routes, and refusal reviews are part of our admin support.

Austria visa FAQs

Do British citizens need a visa for Austria?

No. British passport holders can take a Vienna city break, a Christmas market trip or a ski week in Tyrol without a visa, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System records you at your first Schengen border crossing. UK residents whose nationality needs a visa, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian or Chinese nationals, apply through VFS Global for the Austrian Embassy in London to decide.

Can I apply for an Austria visa in Manchester if I live in London?

Yes. The Embassy of Austria in London decides every UK application and lists VFS Global centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh without dividing the UK into regions. Pick the centre with a suitable slot that you can reach easily. Files lodged in Manchester or Edinburgh have to travel to the embassy in London, so allow a few extra days.

Can I pay for faster processing of an Austria visa?

No. There is no paid fast-track for the visa decision itself, which the Embassy of Austria in London makes. VFS Global may offer optional paid extras, listed on its Austria UK site, but these are for convenience only and do not speed up or affect the decision. The best way to avoid delays is to apply early, within the six-month window.

How much does an Austria visa cost from the UK?

The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, paid in pounds at the current exchange rate. Children under 6 and eligible family members of non-Austrian EU, EEA or Swiss citizens pay nothing. VFS Global charges a separate service fee per application, and any optional extras cost more. The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

What is an EVE for an Austria visa?

An Elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung (EVE) is a free electronic declaration in which a host living in Austria agrees to cover the costs of your stay. The host files it in person at the regional police directorate (Landespolizeidirektion) for their main residence and receives an ID number. You quote that number when you apply, no earlier than 48 hours after it was filed.

How much money do I need in my bank account for an Austria visa?

The embassy's UK guidance gives no fixed daily amount or minimum balance. It asks for 3 months of UK bank statements in your name, showing your current address and a balance no more than a week old, with enough funds for the stay and the return. Cash is not accepted as proof. An EVE from a host in Austria can be used if your own funds are not enough.

Should I apply to Austria if I fly into Munich for a ski trip?

Yes, if you spend most of your nights in Austria. The main destination is decided by the purpose and length of stay, not the airport you land at. Many Tyrol resorts are reached through Munich, but a week in St. Anton or Mayrhofen with one night in Munich is still an Austria application. If nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first.

Can I apply for an Austria visa with an eVisa share code?

Yes. BRPs have expired, so you prove UK status with a share code from GOV.UK's View and prove your immigration status service, plus a printout of the status page. A share code lasts 90 days, so generate it shortly before your appointment. The embassy requires your UK permission to run at least one month beyond the date you leave the Schengen area.

Can I apply for an Austria visa if I am in the UK on a visitor visa?

Generally no. VFS Global's Austria UK guidance says applicants must hold a valid UK residence permit, and that people holding only a short-stay UK visa must apply from their country of residence, where the Austrian embassy or consulate covering that country handles the application. Contact the embassy before booking if you think an exception applies.

Austria, Czech Republic or Hungary if I visit Vienna, Prague and Budapest?

Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. A five-night Vienna, three-night Prague and two-night Budapest trip is an Austria application. If nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Note that a Czech application can only be lodged at VFS London, while Austria and Hungary also use Manchester and Edinburgh.

Can I appeal an Austria visa refusal?

Yes. Before refusing, the embassy sends you a written statement and gives you 7 days to respond. After a refusal, you can lodge a written complaint (Beschwerde) with the embassy within four weeks of the decision being served; the notice states the deadline. It can then go to the Federal Administrative Court. Attach the documents you submitted with German translations; new evidence cannot be added. Many applicants reapply instead.
