Liechtenstein Visa from the UK: Appointments, Checklist & Fees

Non-EU nationals living in the UK apply for a Liechtenstein visa through Switzerland, which handles Liechtenstein's visas, at VFS Global in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. The fee is €90 for adults (£79 on the Swiss embassy's price list); the embassy quotes about 5 working days, but allow longer. Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service: we prepare your checklist and review your documents; you book the appointment free in your own name.

Do UK residents need a visa for Liechtenstein?

It depends on your passport, not your UK address. British, Irish and EU citizens do not need a visa for Liechtenstein; non-EU nationals living in the UK, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Chinese or South African passport holders, usually need a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa before they travel.

Liechtenstein is in the European Economic Area but not the EU, and it has been a full Schengen member since December 2011. A visa issued for Liechtenstein is valid across all 29 Schengen states, and a Schengen visa from any other member state covers Liechtenstein too. Because you apply through the Swiss embassy, its residence rule applies: your UK permission must be valid for more than one month after you leave the Schengen area. The embassy says you must apply in your country of residence, so if you are in the UK on a visitor visa you generally have to apply in your home country; see our guide to applying on a UK visitor visa.

ETIAS, the €20 travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers such as British citizens, has no launch date yet and does not replace a visa for anyone who needs one. Your UK status is proved with a UKVI eVisa and a share code, which the Swiss embassy’s checklists say is mandatory: our eVisa share code guide shows how to generate one.

Liechtenstein visa appointments in the UK

Liechtenstein does not process visas in the UK itself. GOV.UK says Switzerland handles immigration and customs matters for Liechtenstein, and Liechtenstein’s Migration and Passport Office tells visa applicants to apply to the Swiss representation where they live, with the decision shared between the Swiss authorities and the Migration and Passport Office. In practice you book free, in your own name, on the VFS Global Switzerland UK website and attend a centre in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. The Embassy of Switzerland’s Regional Consular Centre London (16-18 Montagu Place, W1H 2BQ) handles the file. If you live outside the UK, check the Migration and Passport Office’s visa page, which lists the few places where a different representation handles Liechtenstein visas.

The Swiss FDFA says VFS Global has processed Swiss visa applications since 1 July 2025, when it took over from TLScontact, and the Swiss embassy says VFS Global is the only authorised agent: applications lodged with any other provider are not valid. You book through a VFS Global account, so expect to register with VFS even if you applied through TLScontact before mid-2025. The booking system may not offer a separate “Liechtenstein” option; if not, choose the Swiss short-stay category and make sure your application form, itinerary and accommodation show that Liechtenstein is your main destination.

Centre Role Transit to the embassy
London Main VFS centre None; the file goes to the embassy from London
Manchester Satellite centre Dispatched to VFS London first; VFS says add 2 extra days
Edinburgh Satellite centre Dispatched to VFS London first; VFS says add 2 extra days

VFS’s Swiss information does not assign centres by postcode, so you can pick the one that suits you.

London

London suits tighter timetables because there is no transfer step before the file reaches the embassy, which matters for Liechtenstein files that already involve a second authority in Vaduz. VFS addresses can change and centres are often shared between countries, so take the address from your appointment confirmation rather than an old map listing. Do not take documents to Montagu Place: UK residents must submit through VFS Global, not at the embassy. Our London appointment guide compares the centres.

Manchester

Manchester is convenient for the North of England, North Wales and much of the Midlands, though anyone may use it. The file goes to VFS London first, adding about two days, but an earlier Manchester slot can still win overall. See our Manchester appointment guide.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the only VFS centre in Scotland for Swiss-handled visas and the nearest option from Northern Ireland, as there is no Belfast centre. Allow the same two extra days in transit; there is no Birmingham, Cardiff or Belfast centre for these visas. More in our Edinburgh appointment guide.

How to book through the official system

  1. Confirm Liechtenstein is your main destination: count nights, including any in Zurich on arrival.
  2. Create a VFS account with your own email address and a phone number you check.
  3. Choose the centre, the short-stay visa category and the number of applicants. VFS says every applicant, including children and infants, needs an appointment and must attend in person.
  4. Enter names and passport numbers exactly as they appear in each passport.
  5. Pick a date and time, add optional extras or none, confirm and print the confirmation.

The embassy says appointment availability is updated daily, based on capacity at VFS and the embassy, and it does not answer requests for earlier appointments. VFS says slots fill quickly around Easter, July to August and Christmas, and recommends booking as soon as travel is planned. Check all three centres and aim for an appointment four to eight weeks before departure, but not so far ahead that you cannot collect week-old documents beforehand.

Important: We do not book, hold or supply visa appointments. Every appointment is booked free, in the applicant’s own name, on the official VFS Global system. We explain how the system works, help you complete the booking correctly in your name and prepare your file for the day.

On the day

Arrive on time with your printed confirmation. Bring originals and copies in the embassy’s checklist order, unstapled, and a debit or credit card: the embassy’s checklists say the visa fee is card only and American Express is not accepted (VFS’s own page mentions cash or card, so a card is the safe choice). Applicants aged 12 and over give fingerprints unless they gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months. VFS may offer optional paid extras; they are never required and do not affect the decision.

Liechtenstein visa document checklist for UK residents

You follow the Swiss embassy’s checklist, so Liechtenstein files carry Switzerland’s tight dating rules plus proof that the principality, not Switzerland or Austria, is your base. The embassy calculates document dates from the day you apply at VFS and says the list is not exhaustive.

Three rules shape the file: bank statements and employer, accountant or enrolment letters must be no more than one week old, your UK permission must be valid for more than one month after you exit Schengen, and a share code is mandatory. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, be valid more than 3 months beyond the visa and have two blank visa pages. Insurance must come from a UK or Schengen-based insurer, name you, and cover every Schengen state for the whole trip with at least €30,000 for emergency medical costs and repatriation; our travel insurance guide explains the wording.

The Liechtenstein-specific part is the itinerary. Show hotel bookings in Liechtenstein, such as in Vaduz, Schaan, Triesenberg or Malbun, or a host’s address, covering most of your nights, and show how you get there: usually a flight to Zurich, then a train towards the border and a local bus into the country. The embassy asks for all transport and accommodation between Schengen countries, and nights in Zurich count towards Switzerland, so include them in your count.

If you are staying with someone, the Swiss visit checklist asks for a signed, dated invitation no more than one month old, in an official Swiss language or English, with the host’s and your full contact details and the exact dates, and it says the host’s residence validity must cover your stay, so include proof of their status, such as a copy of their passport or residence permit. Where the embassy doubts your funds, it can ask for a formal declaration of sponsorship. The SEM’s leaflet says this form is not handed out in advance or available online: the embassy issues it, and a host living in Liechtenstein submits it to the Ausländer- und Passamt (Migration and Passport Office) in Vaduz, which checks their finances and reports back to the embassy. The guarantor undertakes to cover up to CHF 30,000 of costs. Do not try to prepare one unless you are asked.

Employed

A letter on company letterhead, signed and no more than one week old, giving your name and address, position, start date and the signatory’s position, plus three months of payslips. Confirming your approved leave helps. See our employer letter guide.

Self-employed

A signed letter from your accountant, banker or solicitor, no more than one week old, describing your self-employment or business, plus three months of bank statements and your HMRC Self Assessment document. See our self-employed guide.

Students

A signed enrolment letter, no more than one week old, with your course, start and expected end dates and term address. Universities can be slow, so request it early. See our students guide.

Retired

An official pension or benefits letter, dated and no more than one month old, alongside your statements.

The sponsor’s statements and employment letter, a statement of willingness to support you that includes the travel dates, a copy of their passport and proof of your relationship. Our invitation and sponsor letter guide has examples.

Children

Both parents sign the form. Bring the birth certificate and a recent school certificate; a child travelling alone or with one parent needs both parents’ consent and original or certified copies of both parents’ passports. See our children’s guide.

How much money do you need for a Liechtenstein visa?

Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) says visitors paying their own way must show at least CHF 100 per day of their stay. As Liechtenstein files go through the Swiss embassy, use that as your benchmark.

The embassy asks for at least three months of UK statements, no more than one week old, showing your transactions and latest balance. Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc and prices are high, so a five-night stay implies at least CHF 500 of spending money on top of prepaid flights and hotels. Consular staff look for a believable pattern: regular salary credits, normal spending and a balance that comfortably covers the trip. A large unexplained deposit just before you apply raises questions. If a host or relative is paying, their statements must show the same stability. Our bank statements guide explains what is checked.

Liechtenstein visa fees from the UK

The visa fee is the standard Schengen €90 for adults, which the Swiss embassy’s price list (valid from 8 December 2025) sets at £79, and VFS adds its own service fee.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Visa fee, adults (12+) €90 (£79 on the embassy’s price list) Embassy of Switzerland, collected by VFS At your appointment
Visa fee, children aged 6 to 11 €45 (£40) Embassy, collected by VFS At your appointment
Visa fee, under 6 Free - -
Visa facilitation agreement nationals €35 (£31) Embassy, collected by VFS At your appointment
Family members of EU or EFTA citizens Free - -
VFS service fee £20 including VAT, per application (VFS Swiss UK page; confirm when you book) VFS Global At your appointment
Optional extras Set by VFS VFS Global Only if you choose them
Our admin support fee Quoted separately, see /pricing/ Schengen Visa Support Before we start work

The embassy says the visa fee is due when you apply, is not refunded if the application is withdrawn or refused, and may be adjusted at any time for exchange-rate changes. The €35 rate applies to nationals covered by an EU visa facilitation agreement, and the price list also shows a €135 rate for certain nationalities under Article 25a of the Visa Code; the list does not name the countries, so check with the embassy if you think either applies to you. There is no separate Liechtenstein charge on top. Our Schengen visa fee guide compares costs across countries.

How long does a Liechtenstein visa take from the UK?

The Swiss embassy’s checklists quote about 5 working days from receipt, but its visa page gives a standard processing time of up to 15 working days, VFS describes 15 days as the minimum, and a Liechtenstein file involves the Migration and Passport Office in Vaduz, so plan for the longer end. Files from Manchester and Edinburgh add about two days in transit.

Nationalities subject to Schengen prior consultation usually wait up to 14 working days, and any file can take longer if the embassy needs more information.

When What to do
6 months before Earliest you can apply; check passport and UK permission dates
8 to 10 weeks before Fix dates, book hotels or confirm your host; start your VFS booking
4 to 8 weeks before Sensible appointment window for a Liechtenstein file
Final week before the appointment Collect bank statements and employer, accountant or enrolment letters

Liechtenstein visa types for UK residents

Most UK residents need a Schengen type C visa, valid for up to 90 days in any 180, for tourism, family visits or business.

  • Tourist: summer walking on the Liechtenstein Trail, winter skiing in Malbun, or a stay in Vaduz with museum and castle visits. Most nights must be in Liechtenstein; a day trip from Zurich is a Swiss application.
  • Visiting family or friends: a signed, dated invitation no more than one month old with the host’s and your contact details and exact dates, plus proof that their residence status covers your stay, such as a copy of their passport or residence permit. If the host pays, add their statements and a statement of support; the embassy may ask for a declaration of sponsorship. See our family visit guide.
  • Business: Liechtenstein’s financial, trust and industrial firms bring many business visitors. Bring a signed, dated invitation on company letterhead, no more than one month old, stating the purpose, exact dates and who pays, plus your UK employer’s letter. See our business visa guide.
  • Family members of EU or EFTA citizens: a facilitated visa with no visa fee.
  • Students on holiday: a tourist visa with an enrolment letter; check your UK permission runs more than one month beyond your return.

There is no airport in Liechtenstein, so airport transit visas relate to Zurich and are a Swiss matter. Stays over 90 days, including work or family reunion, are not covered by a Schengen visa; contact Liechtenstein’s Migration and Passport Office about national permits.

Tourist

Holidays in Vaduz, skiing in Malbun or walking the Liechtenstein Trail, with most nights booked in the principality, up to 90 days in any 180.

Visiting family or friends

Staying with relatives or friends who live in Liechtenstein, supported by a signed, dated invitation no more than one month old and proof that the host's residence status covers your stay.

Business

Meetings, audits, training or conferences with a company in Liechtenstein, supported by a signed invitation on company letterhead no more than one month old and a UK employer letter.

Family member of an EU/EFTA citizen

Visa issued free of charge (Swiss embassy price list) for spouses and dependants travelling with or joining an EU or EFTA (including Swiss or Liechtenstein) citizen; the VFS Switzerland UK site has a separate EU family checklist.

Multiple entry

For frequent visitors, such as staff of Liechtenstein companies or relatives of residents, with a record of correctly used Schengen visas; issued at the authorities' discretion.

Liechtenstein-specific tips

Most problems with Liechtenstein files come from the itinerary.

  • Count every night. A hotel in Vaduz for one night and in Zurich or Lucerne for six is a Switzerland application; nights in Feldkirch or Bregenz point to Austria. Our which country to apply to guide explains the tie-break rules.
  • Name Liechtenstein clearly as the main destination on the form and in your cover letter, because you are booking through a Swiss process.
  • Book the appointment first, then the paperwork. Letters and statements must be dated in the final week, so request them to arrive just before your slot, and recheck dates if you reschedule.
  • Expect EES at Zurich. Your fingerprints and face are registered at your first Schengen crossing; GOV.UK notes there is an open border between Switzerland and Liechtenstein. See our EES guide.

Why Liechtenstein visas are refused (and how to avoid it)

Most refusals come down to the itinerary or the evidence, not eligibility. The common causes are:

  • Wrong country: most nights are in Switzerland or Austria, not Liechtenstein.
  • Out-of-date documents: statements or letters older than one week on the day you apply.
  • Weak financial evidence: no regular income, a thin balance for Swiss-level costs, or an unexplained deposit.
  • Incomplete invitation: a host letter without their details, status documents or exact dates, or older than one month.
  • UK permission ending too soon: not valid for more than one month beyond your exit from Schengen.
  • Unclear purpose: a business trip with no company invitation or employer letter matching the dates.

The refusal notice ticks the grounds and states how, where and by when you can challenge it. For refusals by Swiss representations, the SEM says the route is a signed written objection, in German, French or Italian with reasons, within 30 days of receiving the refusal, and it then asks for a CHF 200 advance on costs (£186 on the embassy’s price list). Because Liechtenstein is involved in the decision, the authority and deadline on a Liechtenstein refusal may differ, so follow what is printed on your own notice. A fresh application with stronger evidence is often quicker. Our refusal guide compares the options, and our pricing page covers refusal review.

Liechtenstein visa FAQs

Do British citizens need a visa for Liechtenstein?

No. British passport holders can visit Liechtenstein without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. You are registered in the Entry/Exit System (EES) at your first Schengen crossing, usually Zurich airport. A visa is only needed by UK residents whose nationality requires one, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian or Chinese passport holders.

Who handles Liechtenstein visas in the UK?

Switzerland. GOV.UK says Switzerland handles immigration and customs matters for Liechtenstein, and Liechtenstein's Migration and Passport Office tells visa applicants to apply to the Swiss representation where they live, with the decision shared between the Swiss authorities and the Migration and Passport Office. For UK residents that means the Embassy of Switzerland in London and its provider, VFS Global; you cannot lodge a Liechtenstein visa application with Liechtenstein itself in the UK.

Where do I apply for a Liechtenstein visa in the UK?

You apply at a VFS Global Switzerland visa application centre in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. The Swiss FDFA says VFS Global has processed Swiss visa applications since 1 July 2025 (TLScontact before that), and the Swiss embassy says VFS is the only authorised agent, so applications lodged with any other provider are not valid. Book free, in your own name, on the VFS Switzerland UK site, and name Liechtenstein as your main destination on the form.

Can I apply for a Liechtenstein visa in Manchester or Edinburgh if I live in London?

Yes. VFS's Swiss UK information describes Manchester and Edinburgh as satellite centres and does not assign centres by postcode or region. VFS says files lodged at a satellite centre are first dispatched to its London office, so add 2 extra days to the minimum processing time. An earlier slot outside London can still be the quicker option overall.

Should I apply to Liechtenstein or Switzerland if I visit both?

Apply to whichever of Liechtenstein or Switzerland you will spend the most nights in. Liechtenstein has no airport and many visitors stay in Zurich, St. Gallen or Feldkirch and visit Vaduz for a day, which makes it a Swiss or Austrian application. Only apply for Liechtenstein if most nights are genuinely there, for example a business trip or a family stay.

Can I apply for a Liechtenstein visa with an eVisa share code?

Yes, and you must provide one. The Swiss embassy's checklists say a Home Office share code is mandatory. Generate it on GOV.UK's View and prove your immigration status service; it lasts 90 days. Print the status page as well and check your permission runs more than one month beyond the day you leave Schengen. An expired BRP is not proof of status.

How much does a Liechtenstein visa cost from the UK?

The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11; under-6s pay nothing. The Swiss embassy's price list (valid from 8 December 2025) sets these at £79 and £40, and its checklists say card only, with American Express not accepted. VFS Global adds its own service fee, listed on its Swiss UK page at £20 including VAT. Family members of EU or EFTA citizens pay no visa fee, and nationals covered by an EU visa facilitation agreement pay €35 (£31).

How long does a Liechtenstein visa take?

The Swiss embassy's checklists quote about five working days from receipt, while its visa page gives up to 15 working days. Liechtenstein's Migration and Passport Office is involved in Liechtenstein files, and some nationalities need Schengen prior consultation (usually up to 14 working days), so do not count on the fastest time. Applying four to eight weeks before you travel is sensible.

How much money do I need for a Liechtenstein visa?

Switzerland's State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) says visitors paying their own way must show at least CHF 100 per day of their stay. As Liechtenstein files go through the Swiss embassy, use that as your benchmark. Show three months of statements, no more than one week old, with regular income and a balance that covers the whole trip, and no large unexplained deposits.

Does a Schengen visa from another country cover Liechtenstein?

Yes. Liechtenstein has been a full Schengen member since December 2011, so a valid uniform Schengen visa from Switzerland, Austria, Germany or any other member state lets you visit. There is an open border with Switzerland, but carry your passport and stay within the 90/180-day limit.

Can I apply for a Liechtenstein visa if I am in the UK as a visitor?

Generally no. The Swiss embassy says you must apply in your country of residence, and your UK permission must be valid for more than one month after you leave Schengen. That suits people living in the UK on, for example, Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate or family visas, or with settled status. If you are only visiting the UK, you are normally expected to apply in your home country.

What if my Liechtenstein visa is refused?

The refusal notice ticks the grounds and states where and by when you can challenge it. For refusals by Swiss representations, the SEM route is a signed written objection in German, French or Italian within 30 days, with a CHF 200 advance on costs. As Liechtenstein is involved in the decision, follow the authority and deadline printed on your own notice. Many applicants instead reapply with stronger evidence.
