Sweden Visa from the UK: Appointments, Checklist & Fees

UK residents who need a visa apply for a Sweden Schengen visa online through VFS Global, then give biometrics or hand in their passport in London or Edinburgh; the Swedish Migration Agency decides in Sweden. The fee is €90 for adults, and a decision normally takes about 15 days once your passport reaches Sweden. Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service: we prepare your checklist, complete your form and review your documents; you book the appointment free in your own name.

Do UK residents need a visa for Sweden?

Your nationality decides this, not where you live. Holders of British, Irish or EU/EEA passports visit Sweden visa-free for short stays. Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Chinese and South African passport holders, among others, need a type C Schengen visa even with a UK work, study, family or settled status, and Sweden Abroad adds UK Travel Document holders to that list (travel document guide).

Sweden’s two UK centres take files from people living in the UK with residence permission; anyone here only as a visitor should normally apply at home (applying on a UK visitor visa).

Once issued, a Swedish visa also covers a ferry to Helsinki or a train to Copenhagen or Oslo, because it runs across the 29 Schengen states (though not Cyprus or Ireland). When you land at Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter, your entry is recorded in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026. ETIAS, the €20 authorisation for visa-exempt visitors such as British citizens, still has no start date and is never a substitute for a visa (EES and ETIAS explained).

UK status evidence now means a UKVI eVisa share code (eVisa share code guide), and Sweden must hold the most nights of your trip (which country to apply to).

Sweden visa appointments in the UK

VFS Global handles Swedish short-stay visa applications in the UK, with centres in London and Edinburgh. Sweden Abroad names only these two centres, so there is no Sweden centre in Manchester, Birmingham or Cardiff, and neither Sweden Abroad nor VFS sets a regional split between them.

What makes Sweden different from most Schengen countries is where the decision is made. The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) decides your file in Sweden, not a consulate in London. Sweden Abroad is explicit that the Embassy of Sweden in London no longer handles any Schengen visas and does not answer visa enquiries, so do not send applications or questions there. VFS sends your application electronically and your passport by courier, and the passport comes back to the centre where you applied.

Centre Who can use it Who decides Passport transport (Sweden Abroad)
London UK residents Swedish Migration Agency, Sweden About 2 days each way
Edinburgh UK residents Swedish Migration Agency, Sweden About 3 days each way

London

London is the main VFS centre for Sweden and has the shortest courier route. It is the natural choice for London, the South East, East Anglia, the Midlands and South Wales. The street address and opening hours appear on the VFS Sweden UK site and on your booking confirmation; check them there, as VFS centres do move (London appointment guide).

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a VFS satellite centre that suits Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far North of England. VFS says Edinburgh files go to its London office first and on to Sweden the next day, so allow about 2 extra days compared with London. From Newcastle or Belfast, compare both calendars (Edinburgh appointment guide).

How to apply and book

Sweden uses an online e-application through VFS rather than a paper file handed over at the counter.

  1. Count your nights and confirm Sweden is your main destination.
  2. Create an account on the VFS Sweden e-application portal in your own name, and complete a separate application for each family member.
  3. Upload your documents. A VFS submission officer checks them for completeness and may ask for more through the portal.
  4. Download, sign and re-upload the application form when VFS asks you to.
  5. Book a biometrics appointment in London or Edinburgh. If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, VFS says you may post your passport or drop it off instead; fingerprints given for a residence permit, a D visa or a refused application cannot be reused.

Important: Sweden Abroad names VFS as the only authorised service provider for Sweden in the UK and warns against other agents selling services. Your appointment sits in your own name on the VFS portal and costs nothing to book. Schengen Visa Support never sells, reserves or holds appointments; we explain the Swedish process and help you complete your own application and booking correctly.

VFS warns that document checks and processing can take longer around Easter, the summer holidays (July and August) and Christmas. Start as soon as your dates are firm, ideally six to eight weeks ahead, and check back regularly, as cancelled slots reappear. Our Schengen appointment guide covers rescheduling.

On the day

Bring your passport and appointment confirmation. Staff record fingerprints and a photo (children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints) and keep your passport for its trip to Sweden. VFS says children under 18 must attend with both parents, and postal applications are not accepted for them. VFS may offer optional paid extras; they are charged by VFS and have no effect on the Migration Agency’s decision (biometrics appointment guide).

Sweden visa document checklist for UK residents

Nobody at the Migration Agency meets you; an officer in Sweden reads only the file VFS forwards. The interactive checklist below lists every item, so this section covers the Swedish points that most often need attention.

Passport and insurance rules are the same as for any Schengen state: a passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond the visa’s expiry, and individual medical travel insurance of at least €30,000 valid in every Schengen state (UK visa validity rules, travel insurance guide). The Sweden checklist published by VFS asks for UK residence permission valid at least one month beyond the date you leave the Schengen area; leave a wider margin if you can. If you plan husky sledding or snowmobiling in Lapland, check that your policy covers those activities.

The Migration Agency expects you to be able to describe the purpose of your visit, so a short cover letter with a day-by-day itinerary is worth the effort (cover letter guide). Accommodation should cover every night, including nights on overnight trains to Kiruna or in Copenhagen or Oslo, and the dates on your form, bookings and insurance should match to the day (flight and hotel bookings).

Employed, self-employed, students and retired

Sweden’s checklist asks employees for a recent signed employer letter showing the employer’s UK registration number, your position and your salary, plus 3 months of payslips. Self-employed applicants need a letter from an accountant, banker or solicitor describing the business and the salary drawn, plus their HMRC self-assessment. Students need a signed letter from their school, college or university showing the course, hours per week and attendance. Our documents checklist and employer letter guide cover the rest.

Sweden’s own tool for a host in Sweden is the Migration Agency’s form 241011, Invitation - Before application for Schengen visa (the Swedish version is form 240011). The host completes and signs it and sends you, with it:

  • a copy of their passport, ID card or equivalent identity document; the Migration Agency says a residence permit card does not count as an ID document here
  • an Inbjudan population register extract ordered from the Swedish Tax Agency, Skatteverket, which does not need a stamp or signature
  • income and asset documents if they are paying for your trip (VFS’s Sweden UK page lists 3 months of the host’s wage slips and 3 months of bank statements)

Ask the host to order the extract early, because the signed form and extract then have to reach you in the UK before you upload your file. If a spouse or parent in the UK supports you, Sweden’s checklist asks for proof of the relationship, their last 3 months of bank statements and a signed statement that they will support you (invitation and sponsor letters).

Children

Bring a birth certificate; children travelling alone or with one parent also need parental consent and the parents’ passports or certified copies (children’s guide). The Migration Agency accepts that younger children may need less than SEK 700 a day.

How much money do you need for a Sweden visa?

The Swedish Migration Agency says visitors should have SEK 700 for each day of their stay. Sweden publishes a clear figure, so a 7-day trip needs about SEK 4,900 and a 14-day trip about SEK 9,800 for living costs, on top of your return journey.

The figure can be lower if your meals and accommodation are already paid for, if you are staying with relatives or friends, or for younger children. The person or company inviting you can also cover it.

Show the money with at least the last 3 months of UK bank statements in your name, converted at a realistic rate. The pattern matters as much as the balance: regular income arriving, a balance that does not fall to zero before payday, and no unexplained large deposits shortly before applying. If a host in Sweden is paying, their income and asset documents count instead. Our bank statements guide explains what decision-makers look for.

Sweden visa fees from the UK

The visa fee is €90 for applicants aged 12 and over, €45 for children aged 6-11 and free under 6 (Schengen visa fee guide). VFS charges it in pounds at the current exchange rate, together with its own service charge, and VFS’s fee sheet describes all fees as non-refundable, so a refusal does not return the visa fee. Your host’s form 241011 and Skatteverket extract are arranged in Sweden and are not paid through VFS.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Visa fee, 12 and over €90, charged in pounds Swedish Migration Agency, via VFS When you apply
Visa fee, children 6-11 €45, charged in pounds Swedish Migration Agency, via VFS When you apply

VFS does not accept cheques or bank transfers. Its process page adds that the service charge is locked in once your uploaded documents have been verified, so check everything before you submit.

How long does a Sweden visa take from the UK?

Migrationsverket, not a London consulate, works your file, so the timing has two parts: its own handling time of about 15 days from when it receives your application and passport (up to 45 when it needs more documents, an interview or checks), and the courier legs between the UK and Sweden.

Sweden Abroad gives normal transport times of about 2 days each way from London and 3 from Edinburgh, while VFS warns that international shipping can take 3-5 working days each way. Your application and passport must also reach the Migration Agency at least 15 days before your trip starts. Realistically, allow four to five weeks from appointment to passport return, and more in peak season.

Stage Sweden timing
Host pack Ask for form 241011 and the Skatteverket extract well before you upload your file
Earliest Up to 6 months before travel
Courier About 2 days each way from London, 3 from Edinburgh (Sweden Abroad); up to 3-5 working days each way (VFS)
Decision About 15 days in Sweden, up to 45
Latest Lodge well over 3 weeks before travel, so your file reaches Migrationsverket at least 15 days ahead

More detail is in our processing time guide.

Sweden visa types for UK residents

Whatever the purpose, Sweden issues the same short-stay C visa, lodged through VFS and decided by Migrationsverket; only the supporting evidence changes.

  • Tourist: Stockholm and its archipelago, Gothenburg and the west coast, Gotland, Midsummer, the Christmas markets, and Lapland trips to Kiruna, Abisko and the Icehotel. Bookings for every night and an itinerary are enough; no invitation is needed.
  • Visiting family or friends: form 241011, a copy of the host’s passport or ID card and the Skatteverket Inbjudan extract, plus the host’s income documents if they pay. Staying with them also covers your accommodation evidence (family visit guide).
  • Business or conference: an invitation from the Swedish company or conference organiser naming you, the dates and the purpose, with a letter from your UK employer (business visa guide).
  • Religious, cultural or sports visits: an invitation from the congregation, festival, club or organisation hosting you.
  • Medical treatment: two medical certificates (one from Sweden, one from your country of residence showing you cannot be treated there), proof that money for treatment and aftercare has been deposited in Sweden, and the Migration Agency’s questionnaire 219011. SEK 700 a day still applies unless you will be hospitalised or live where you are treated.
  • Family member of an EU/EEA citizen: a facilitated, free visa if you travel with or join an EU, EEA or Swiss family member; bring proof of the relationship and their nationality.
  • Airport transit: only for nationalities that need one to change planes at a Swedish airport without passing through passport control.

Migrationsverket can grant multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years (multiple-entry rules), while staying in Sweden for more than 90 days is a residence permit matter outside this visa.

Tourist

Holidays, Stockholm city breaks, the west coast and archipelagos, Lapland and northern lights trips, and touring other Schengen states, up to 90 days in any 180.

Visiting family or friends

Staying with relatives or friends in Sweden, supported by the host's form 241011, a copy of their passport or ID card and a Skatteverket Inbjudan extract.

Business or conference

Meetings, trade fairs, conferences and training, supported by an invitation from the Swedish company or conference organiser and a letter from your UK employer.

Religious, cultural or sports visit

Visits to a congregation or religious organisation, festivals, competitions and similar events, supported by an invitation from the organisation hosting you in Sweden.

Medical treatment

Planned treatment in Sweden, supported by two medical certificates (one from Sweden, one from your country of residence), proof of money deposited in Sweden for treatment and aftercare, and the Migration Agency's questionnaire 219011.

Family member of an EU/EEA citizen

Facilitated visa for spouses and dependants travelling with or joining an EU, EEA or Swiss national; no visa fee.

Airport transit

Only for certain nationalities changing planes at a Swedish airport without passing through passport control.

Sweden-specific tips

Because the Migration Agency decides remotely and your passport travels to Sweden, small gaps cost more time than with a London consulate.

  • Get the host pack right first time. A plain invitation letter is not form 241011. Check the host has signed it, attached a copy of their passport or ID card (not a residence permit card) and included the Inbjudan extract.
  • Do the SEK 700 sum. Multiply your days by SEK 700, convert to pounds, and make sure your statements comfortably clear it after rent and bills.
  • Count Scandinavian nights carefully. Malmö-Copenhagen trips, Stockholm-Helsinki ferries and Lapland tours that cross into Finland or Norway often split nights. Sweden is only correct if it has the most.
  • Upload clear scans. VFS puts the responsibility for correct, good-quality uploads on you, and missing items are requested through the portal, which costs time.
  • Do not contact the embassy about your visa. It no longer handles Schengen visas; use VFS for the process and your decision letter for appeals.

Why Sweden visas are refused (and how to avoid it)

Most Swedish refusals come from files that do not support the trip as described, rather than from a single missing paper.

  • Insufficient funds: statements that do not cover SEK 700 a day, or large recent deposits with no explanation.
  • Incomplete invitation pack: a letter instead of form 241011, a missing Inbjudan extract, or a residence permit card offered as the host’s ID.
  • Unclear purpose: a thin itinerary or no description of the trip.
  • Doubts about your return: UK permission ending soon after the trip, or no evidence of approved leave or studies.
  • Wrong country: more nights in Denmark, Norway or Finland than in Sweden.
  • Insurance below the rule: under €30,000, missing repatriation cover, or not valid in every Schengen state for every day of the trip.

You can appeal in writing within three weeks of the date you received the decision; the decision explains how. The Migration Agency first reviews its own decision, and if it does not change it, the appeal goes to a Migration Court in Sweden. Because an appeal can take time, a fresh application that answers each refusal ground is often quicker. Our refused Schengen visa guide compares both routes, and refusal reviews are part of our admin support.

Sweden visa FAQs

Do I need a visa for Sweden if I live in the UK?

It depends on your passport. British, Irish and EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Sweden. UK residents with a nationality that needs a Schengen visa, for example Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Chinese or South African passport holders, must apply before travelling. Sweden Abroad also confirms that holders of a UK Travel Document need a visa. You apply through VFS Global, with centres in London and Edinburgh.

Can I apply for a Sweden visa in Manchester?

No. Sweden Abroad names only the VFS Global centres in London and Edinburgh for Sweden in the UK, so there is no Sweden centre in Manchester, Birmingham or Cardiff. If you live in the North of England, the Midlands, Wales or Northern Ireland, choose whichever of London or Edinburgh is easier to reach. Both send your file to the same decision-maker, the Swedish Migration Agency.

Can I go to the Swedish Embassy in London to apply?

No. Sweden Abroad states that the Embassy of Sweden in London no longer handles any Schengen visas. It cannot receive applications and does not reply to Schengen visa enquiries. VFS Global is the only authorised external service provider for Sweden in the UK. Questions about your application go to VFS; the decision is made by the Migration Agency in Sweden.

Can I pay for faster processing of a Sweden visa?

No. There is no paid fast-track for the Sweden visa decision itself, which the Swedish Migration Agency makes. VFS Global may offer optional paid extras at its centres, but these are for convenience only and do not speed up or affect the decision. The reliable way to avoid delays is to apply early, within the six-month window, with a complete file.

How much money do I need for a Sweden visa?

The Swedish Migration Agency says you should have SEK 700 for each day of your visit, so a 10-day trip needs about SEK 7,000 for living costs. The amount can be lower for younger children, if your meals and accommodation are already paid for, or if you stay with relatives or friends. Show it with at least 3 months of UK bank statements, or your sponsor's documents if someone else is paying.

What does my host in Sweden need to send me?

Your host fills in the Migration Agency's form 241011, Invitation - Before application for Schengen visa, and sends it with a copy of their passport, ID card or equivalent identity document and an Inbjudan population register extract from Skatteverket. If they are paying for your trip, they add income and asset documents. A residence permit card does not count as the host's ID, and the Skatteverket extract does not need a stamp or signature.

Can I apply for a Sweden visa with an eVisa share code?

Yes. BRPs have all expired, so you prove your UK status with your UKVI eVisa. Generate a share code on GOV.UK's View and prove your immigration status service and include it with a printout of your status page. A share code lasts 90 days, so create it close to your appointment. Sweden's checklist asks for UK permission valid at least one month beyond the date you leave the Schengen area.

Should I apply to Sweden or Denmark if I visit both?

Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. Trips that cross the Øresund Bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen, or combine Stockholm with Oslo or Helsinki, often split nights. If nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Denmark has a VFS centre in Manchester as well as London and Edinburgh, but you can use it only if Denmark is genuinely your main destination.

Can I apply for a Sweden visa if I am in the UK on a visitor visa?

Generally no. The UK centres are for people living here with a UK residence permission, for example on a Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate or family visa, or with settled status. If you are only visiting the UK, you are normally expected to apply in your country of residence. If you think your circumstances are an exception, check with VFS Global before paying.

How do I appeal a Sweden visa refusal?

Send a written appeal within three weeks of the date you received the decision, following the instructions on the refusal letter. The Swedish Migration Agency first reviews whether to change its decision; if it does not, it passes the appeal to a Migration Court in Sweden. An appeal can take time, so if the refusal was caused by a fixable gap, a fresh application is often quicker.
