Finland Visa from the UK: Appointments, Checklist & Fees

UK residents who need a visa complete the form on finlandvisa.fi and submit it at VFS Global in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. The Embassy of Finland in London decides, usually within 15 days, and the fee is €90 for adults.

Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service. We prepare your Finland checklist, complete your form and review your documents; you book the appointment free in your own name.

Do UK residents need a visa for Finland?

Your passport decides it, not your UK address. British, Irish and EU passport holders fly to Rovaniemi or Helsinki without a visa. Holders of Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Chinese, South African and other visa-required passports must get a Finland Schengen visa before the trip, even with settled status or a Skilled Worker visa, because UK permission covers living here, not entering Finland.

Finland asks you to apply through the visa centre in your country of residence, so the Embassy of Finland in London deals with people living in the UK; someone in Britain on a UK visitor visa normally applies at home. Once issued, the Finnish sticker works in all 29 Schengen states, so a Tallinn ferry, a Stockholm stop or a night in Norwegian Lapland fits on it, while Cyprus, Ireland and Russia do not.

Landing at Helsinki-Vantaa, Rovaniemi or Kittilä, first-time arrivals now give fingerprints and a face scan to the EU Entry/Exit System, fully running since 10 April 2026. ETIAS (€20, for visa-exempt travellers only) still has no start date and never applies to visa holders; see our EES and ETIAS guide.

Now that BRPs have expired, UK residence is shown with your eVisa and a share code; bring a printout of the result page. Our eVisa share code guide walks through it.

Finland visa appointments in the UK

You book a Finland visa appointment free of charge, in your own name, on VFS Global’s official Finland UK system, and attend in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. Before booking, complete the application form on finlandvisa.fi, the online form service the Embassy of Finland points applicants to (a PDF form is the alternative).

The Embassy of Finland lists all three centres without dividing the UK into regions, so you can pick whichever has the earliest slot. All three are open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30, according to VFS. The Embassy of Finland in London makes every decision, while VFS only takes in papers, fees and biometrics and hands passports back. Residence, work and study permits belong to the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) and fall outside this page.

Important: Finland slots on the VFS Global system are free and booked in your own name. Schengen Visa Support does not book, hold or supply them; our part is the finlandvisa.fi form, picking a centre and guiding you through booking it yourself.

London

London is the natural choice for London, the South East, the East of England and the South West, and it has the shortest journey to the Embassy. Check the street address on the VFS Finland UK site and your booking confirmation before you travel rather than relying on an old listing.

Manchester

Manchester is convenient for the North West, Yorkshire, the Midlands and North Wales. It is also handy if you are flying to Lapland on a winter charter from Manchester Airport. Your file is couriered to London and back, so allow a few extra days on top of the Embassy’s processing time.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the most convenient centre for Scotland, the North East and, with a short flight, Northern Ireland. As with Manchester, the file travels to London and back by courier, so add a few days.

Finland centre Opening days (VFS) Courier time to the Embassy Handy for
London Monday to Friday Shortest South of England, Lapland flights from London airports
Manchester Monday to Friday Allow a few extra days North of England, Midlands, Manchester Lapland charters
Edinburgh Monday to Friday Allow a few extra days Scotland, North East, Northern Ireland

How to book

  1. Complete the form on finlandvisa.fi. Follow its instructions on printing and signing; for a child, check who must sign as parent or guardian.
  2. Create a VFS Global account with your own email address and enter names exactly as they appear in each passport.
  3. Choose a centre and date. If no dates show, the centres are fully booked for now; check back regularly, because released and cancelled slots appear only in the same official system.
  4. Print the confirmation and bring it with your file.

Demand can be seasonal. Many UK residents apply in autumn for December trips to Rovaniemi, Levi and Saariselkä, so slots can be harder to find then. Check all three centres and look again at different times of day. Our Schengen visa appointment guide has more on finding dates.

On the day

Bring your signed application form, originals and one set of copies, and arrive on time. Finland’s VFS checklists say supporting documents should be in English, Finnish or Swedish (or translated). VFS staff keep your passport for the Embassy of Finland and take fingerprints unless you gave them for a Schengen visa less than 59 months earlier. Paid VFS add-ons, such as premium services or courier return, do not speed up the Embassy’s decision.

Finland visa document checklist for UK residents

A Finnish file is built around the signed application form and a photo that meets the finlandvisa.fi guidance, then the usual passport, share code, insurance, bookings and 3 months of statements showing €50 a day. The interactive checklist below has every item; here is what the Embassy of Finland checks most closely.

The photo is an easy place to stumble. Finland publishes its photo guidance on finlandvisa.fi, and Finland’s VFS checklists ask for a recent colour photo meeting ICAO standards, taken within the last 6 months, with a white or light background. Check the size and head-height rules on finlandvisa.fi before you pay for photos. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, have two blank pages and be valid for 3 months after your trip ends.

For UK residence, bring the printed share code result, plus a council tax bill, tenancy agreement or similar if asked; Finland’s VFS checklists ask for UK permission valid at least 3 months after you leave Schengen. Insurance needs €30,000 Schengen-wide cover, and for Lapland it should not exclude husky, reindeer or snowmobile safaris; our travel insurance guide has more.

For travel and accommodation, a Lapland package confirmation is strong evidence because it shows every night and the charter flights. On independent trips, list each night, including any Tallinn or Stockholm leg. If you are staying with someone in Finland, Finland’s proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form, completed by your host, means their undertaking to pay may be taken into account.

Employed

Your employer letter and 3 payslips; for a Lapland package, make sure the approved leave dates match every night on the booking.

Self-employed

Companies House or SA302 evidence and business statements, with personal funds still reaching €50 a day; our self-employed guide covers uneven income.

Students

A university letter showing the Lapland or Helsinki trip falls in a break, plus funds or a parent’s sponsorship; see our students guide.

Retired

Pension award letters, with statements showing the payments cover €50 for each day in Finland.

A UK-based sponsor adds a signed letter, statements, passport, UK status and proof of relationship. A sponsor living in Finland instead completes Finland’s proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form, with evidence of their funds.

Children

A parent or guardian signs the application; add the full birth certificate and, if the child is not travelling with both parents, written consent from both parents or guardians with copies of their passports. Our children’s guide and document checklist guide cover the rest.

How much money do you need for a Finland visa?

Finland sets a clear figure: at least €50 for each day you spend in the country, in force since 1 January 2024 (it was €30 before). That is a minimum for living costs in Finland; you also need to show you can pay for the trip itself, including your journey home.

Days in Finland Minimum funds at €50 a day
4 days €200
7 days €350
10 days €500
14 days €700

Treat this as a floor, not a target. Lapland in December is expensive, and the officer will compare your balance with the cost of the package you are booking. They also look at regular income and the balance left after rent and bills, and a large unexplained deposit before applying usually hurts. If a host in Finland is paying, the proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form, introduced alongside the €50 rule, lets a Finnish citizen or a person living in Finland with a residence permit undertake to finance your trip, and the Embassy may take that into account. Our guide to bank statements for a Schengen visa explains how to present them.

Finland visa fees from the UK

The Finnish visa fee is paid when you submit at VFS Global, which may add its own service charge on top. The fee itself is the standard Schengen €90 for adults, €45 for ages 6 to 11 and free under 6, and the Embassy of Finland’s fee list gives the sterling equivalents (currently £77 and £39, at €1 = £0.8558; the rate is updated and VFS’s own page may round slightly differently, so check before you pay); our Schengen visa fee guide compares countries.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Finnish visa fee, 12 and over €90 (£77 on the Embassy’s current list) Embassy of Finland, via VFS At the appointment
Finnish visa fee, ages 6-11 €45 (£39 on the Embassy’s current list) Embassy of Finland, via VFS At the appointment
Under 6, family member of an EU citizen with free movement rights, or (on the Embassy’s list) pupils and students on study or educational trips No fee - -
VFS service fee Listed as €20 including VAT on VFS’s Finland UK information page; check the current sterling amount VFS Global At the appointment
Optional extras (such as courier return or premium services) Priced by VFS VFS Global When booking or at the centre
Our admin support fee Quoted separately, see pricing Schengen Visa Support Before we start

A refusal does not bring the fee back, and Finland’s €255 review costs more than starting again (see below).

How long does a Finland visa take from the UK?

The Embassy of Finland in London normally decides within 15 calendar days (VFS’s Finland UK page describes the Embassy’s usual processing as about 10 working days), stretching to 45 when it needs more checks or documents, and some nationalities wait longer while other Schengen states are consulted. Files from Manchester and Edinburgh need a few extra days for the courier to London and back, and every passport needs time to be returned. The window to apply opens 6 months before travel and closes 15 calendar days before.

When What to do
10-12 weeks before Confirm Finland is your main destination; ask your host for an invitation or sponsorship form
8-10 weeks before Complete finlandvisa.fi; book VFS; get a photo that meets the finlandvisa.fi guidance
6-8 weeks before Generate your share code; attend the appointment
3-5 weeks before Decision and passport return
15 days before Latest date to apply

For December Lapland trips, aim to attend in September or October. Our processing time guide explains what causes delays.

Finland visa types for UK residents

Almost every Lapland, Helsinki or business trip uses the short-stay type C visa, up to 90 days in any 180. The purpose you select on finlandvisa.fi changes the document list it shows you.

  • Tourism: package confirmations for Lapland, or hotel bookings and an outline itinerary, such as Helsinki, Porvoo and a day in Tallinn.
  • Visiting family or friends: a signed invitation with your host’s address, dates and relationship, and a copy of their passport or Finnish residence permit. If they pay for or house you, add the proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form.
  • Business: an invitation from the Finnish company with dates and who pays, plus your UK employer’s letter. Examples include Helsinki trade fairs and technology events.
  • Cultural, sports or official visits: an invitation from the organiser, for example a festival, competition or academic event.
  • EU, EEA and Swiss family members: free and simplified for spouses and dependants travelling with or joining the EU national.
  • Airport transit: Helsinki-Vantaa is a major hub for flights to Asia. Only nationals of certain countries need an airport transit visa to change planes there; check the EU list for your passport before you book.

UK students travelling on holiday apply as tourists, with a university letter as proof of ties. Stays longer than 90 days, for work, study or family, are handled through a residence permit from Migri (or, in limited cases, a national D visa), not a Schengen visa.

Tourist

Holidays, Lapland winter trips, Helsinki city breaks and touring Finland and other Schengen states, up to 90 days in any 180.

Visiting family or friends

Staying with relatives or friends in Finland, supported by an invitation and, if the host pays or houses you, Finland's proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form.

Business

Meetings, trade fairs, conferences and training, supported by an invitation from the Finnish company and a letter from your UK employer.

Cultural, sports or official visit

Festivals, competitions, academic events and official delegations, supported by an invitation from the organiser in Finland.

Family member of an EU/EEA citizen

Facilitated visa for spouses and dependants travelling with or joining an EU, EEA or Swiss national; no visa fee.

Airport transit

Needed only by nationals of certain countries on the EU airport transit list when changing planes at Helsinki-Vantaa without passing through passport control; check the list for your passport before booking.

Finland-specific tips

These are the Finland-specific points that most often trip up UK applicants.

  • Start on finlandvisa.fi. It is the route the Embassy points applicants to, and it shows the document list and photo rules for your purpose of travel, without logging in, before you book.
  • Check the photo rules. Follow the Finnish guidance on finlandvisa.fi rather than assuming a standard UK passport photo will do.
  • Count nights on Lapland tours. Many Northern Lights trips cross into Swedish or Norwegian Lapland. Apply to the country where you sleep most; our guide on which country to apply to explains the rule.
  • Leave Russia out. The Finnish Government has kept the land border crossings with Russia closed since late 2023, until further notice, and a Schengen visa does not cover Russia anyway.
  • Tallinn and Åland are fine. Estonia and the Åland Islands are inside Schengen, so the Helsinki to Tallinn ferry or a trip to Åland is not a new entry into the area.
  • Check activity cover. An insurance policy that excludes the snowmobile safari you are travelling for raises questions.
  • Time the share code. It lasts 90 days, so create it close to your VFS date rather than when you first fill in finlandvisa.fi.

Tip: Before your Lapland flight, compare the Finnish sticker with your package dates and entries; ask the Embassy of Finland to correct any mismatch first.

Why Finland visas are refused (and how to avoid it)

Most Finnish refusals come down to evidence, not eligibility.

  • Funds below €50 a day, or statements that do not support an expensive Lapland package.
  • Unclear purpose: a thin itinerary, missing nights or no invitation from a host.
  • Doubts about return: UK leave ending soon after the trip, or weak ties to work or study here. Time the trip so your current permission clearly covers it.
  • Wrong main destination: most nights in Sweden or Norway on a Lapland tour.
  • Insurance gaps: cover below €30,000, not valid across Schengen or excluding planned activities.
  • Inconsistent details between the form, bookings, the invitation and your cover letter.

If you are refused, you can ask the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland for an administrative review within 30 days of receiving the decision; instructions come with the refusal. The request must be written in Finnish or Swedish and the processing fee is €255 (£218 on the Embassy’s current list), which must be paid before it is considered; it is refunded if the decision is changed in your favour, but not if you withdraw the request. If the Ministry upholds the refusal, you can appeal to the Helsinki Administrative Court within 30 days of receiving that decision, again in Finnish or Swedish, by sending the appeal to the Ministry or a Finnish mission; the court fee is €310. Because a review costs more than a new application, reapplying with stronger evidence is often the quicker route when the refusal was about a missing or weak document. Our refused Schengen visa guide compares both routes, and our pricing page covers refusal review.

Finland visa FAQs

Do I need a visa for Finland if I live in the UK?

It depends on your passport, not where you live. For a Lapland winter trip or a Helsinki city break, British, Irish and EU citizens do not need one and can stay up to 90 days in any 180. UK residents with a passport that needs a Schengen visa, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian or Chinese, must apply through VFS Global in the UK first, even with settled status or a Skilled Worker visa.

Can I apply for a Finland visa in Manchester if I live in London?

Yes, as far as the official pages show. The Embassy of Finland lists VFS Global centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh without dividing the UK into regions, so you can pick the one with the earliest date. The Embassy in London decides every file, so passports submitted in Manchester or Edinburgh travel to London and back by courier, which adds a few days to the 15-day standard.

What is finlandvisa.fi and do I have to use it?

Finlandvisa.fi is the online service the Embassy of Finland points applicants to for completing the Schengen application form. It also lists the documents and photo rules for your purpose of travel, which you can check without logging in. A PDF form, filled in by hand or on a computer, is the alternative. Finlandvisa.fi does not book your appointment or replace in-person submission; those happen through VFS Global.

How much money do I need for a Finland visa?

Finland expects at least €50 for each day you spend in the country, a figure in force since 1 January 2024 (it was €30 before). A seven-day trip therefore needs €350 as a floor, and officers also check that your balance fits the cost of the trip. If a Finnish citizen or a resident with a Finnish residence permit completes the proof of sponsorship form, their support may be taken into account.

Can I apply for a Finland visa with an eVisa share code?

Yes. Now that BRPs have expired, your eVisa is your proof of UK residence, shared through GOV.UK's View and prove your immigration status service. A share code lasts 90 days, so generate it close to your VFS date and bring a printout of the result page. Finland's VFS checklists ask for UK permission valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area; check the current list before you book.

Can I pay for faster processing of a Finland visa?

Generally no. The Embassy of Finland in London decides the file, and paid extras sold by VFS Global, such as premium services or courier return, add convenience only, not a faster decision. The Embassy's fee list shows an accelerated procedure only for certain nationalities covered by EU visa facilitation agreements. For a December Lapland trip, simply apply early, since the window opens 6 months before travel.

Should I apply to Finland or Norway for a Lapland trip?

Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. Lapland spans Finland, Sweden and Norway, and Northern Lights tours often cross borders. Five nights in Rovaniemi and two in Tromsø is a Finland application. If the nights are equal, apply to the country whose visit is the main purpose, or where you enter first. Count the nights on your itinerary, not the tour's name.

Can I take the ferry to Tallinn on a Finland visa?

Yes. Estonia is in the Schengen area, so a Finnish Schengen visa covers a day trip or overnight stay in Tallinn, and the ferry between two Schengen states does not count as a new entry into the area. The visa does not cover Russia, and the Finnish Government has kept its land border crossings with Russia closed since late 2023. Leave any Russia leg out of your plans.

Can I apply for a Finland visa if I am in the UK as a visitor?

Generally no. The Embassy of Finland in London handles applications from people lawfully resident in the UK, such as Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate or family visa holders and those with settled status. UK visitors are normally expected to apply in their country of residence. Ask the Embassy before booking VFS if you think an exception applies.

Can I appeal a Finland visa refusal from the UK?

Yes. You can ask the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland for an administrative review within 30 days of receiving the decision. The request must be in writing in Finnish or Swedish and costs €255. If the Ministry upholds the refusal, you can appeal to the Helsinki Administrative Court within 30 days of that decision, for a court fee of €310. Reapplying with stronger evidence is often quicker.

Do I need a special passport photo for a Finland visa?

Check before you print. Finland publishes its photo guidance on finlandvisa.fi, and Finland's VFS checklists ask for a recent colour photo meeting international (ICAO) standards, taken within the last 6 months, with a white or light background and a neutral expression. Compare the size and head-height rules on finlandvisa.fi with what your UK studio prints by default, and ask for the right format.
