Schengen Visa for Indian Nationals Living in the UK

By Schengen Visa Support visa admin team Published Updated 10 min read Fact-checked

Quick answer

Indian nationals living legally in the UK need a Schengen visa, even with ILR. Apply from the UK to your main destination's consulate, through its visa centre (BLS, TLScontact, VFS or GVCW). Fee €90, decision usually within 15 days. Prove UK status with an eVisa share code, ideally valid 3 months beyond your return. The 2024 India cascade covers only applications made in India.

Do Indian nationals living in the UK need a Schengen visa?

Yes. Every Indian passport holder needs a short-stay Schengen visa to visit any of the 29 Schengen countries, however long they have lived in the UK and whatever their UK status. That includes Skilled Worker and Health and Care visa holders, their dependants, students, Graduate route visa holders and people with Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Because you live here lawfully, you apply from the UK rather than from India. One visa covers the whole Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you are in the UK only as a visitor, the centres here will not normally accept you; see our guide to applying on a UK visitor visa.

Note: British citizens of Indian origin travel on a British passport and do not need a Schengen visa. India does not allow dual citizenship, and an OCI card has no effect on Schengen rules.

The process is the same for every nationality, and our Schengen visa from the UK guide covers it in full. This page focuses on what matters most for Indian applicants: where to apply, eVisa proof, the cascade, name formats, documents from India and funds.

Which country should you apply to?

You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are equal, apply to the country whose visit is the main purpose of the trip or, failing that, your first point of entry.

This matters more than people expect. A family trip that is mainly a week in Switzerland with two nights in Paris belongs with Switzerland, even if you fly into France. Applying to the country with the easiest appointments for a trip that is mainly elsewhere is a common refusal reason. Our guide to which country to apply to works through mixed itineraries.

Where do Indian nationals apply in the UK? Country by country

Each country uses its own provider and booking system, and some decide where you submit by your home address. The table covers the destinations most often chosen by UK-based Indian travellers, with the point worth knowing before you book.

Country UK provider Cities Notable for Indian applicants
Spain BLS International London, Manchester, Edinburgh Centre set by address: the Midlands, including Leicester and Birmingham, go to Manchester. Certificates from India must be apostilled or legalised
France TLScontact London, Manchester, Edinburgh Any centre, but since 1 August 2026 (London, Manchester) and 11 September 2026 (Edinburgh) TLScontact allocates appointments from a queue and you have 12 hours to pay and confirm. Funds read against €65 a day with hotels, €120 without
Italy VFS Global London, Manchester, Edinburgh Appointments only through VFS (which may direct you to its Italy Global app). Plan for UK residence valid 3 months beyond the trip; non-UK certificates translated into English or Italian and legalised
Germany TLScontact London, Manchester, Edinburgh Since 1 June 2026 London and Manchester allocate slots from a queue; you then have 24 hours to pay and confirm. Scotland residents use Edinburgh
Netherlands VFS Global London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham (Smethwick; check the current address on the VFS site) The only one of these with a Midlands centre. €55 per person per day
Greece GVCW London, Manchester, Edinburgh At least £40 a day in your UK current account; UK permission valid 1 month after you leave Schengen. Manchester and Edinburgh add about 5 days. Apply 6-8 weeks ahead for summer
Portugal VFS Global London, Manchester, Edinburgh County decides: Midlands and the North use Manchester or Edinburgh, never London
Switzerland VFS Global London, Manchester, Edinburgh Bank statements no more than one week old; foreign-language certificates translated
Austria VFS Global London, Manchester, Edinburgh A host who pays for you files an electronic guarantee (EVE) and sends you the reference

The visa fee is the same whichever country you choose: €90 for adults (around £80, set by each consulate), €45 for children aged 6-11 and free under 6, plus the visa centre’s own service charge. See the France visa fees table for how the charges are paid at a centre.

Every provider books appointments in the applicant’s own name on its official system, and the booking itself is free; extras such as premium lounges are optional and charged by the centre. We do not book, hold or supply appointments. We explain how each system works and help you complete the booking correctly yourself. Each family member needs their own slot, and everyone aged 12 and over gives fingerprints, which can be reused for 59 months. For timing, see our appointment guide.

How do you prove your UK status with an eVisa?

You prove it with your UKVI eVisa and a share code, not a BRP. All BRPs have now expired, and an expired card is not proof of status for a Schengen application.

Before your appointment:

  1. Sign in to GOV.UK’s View and prove your immigration status service.
  2. Check the passport linked to your eVisa is the one you are applying with. If you renewed your Indian passport in the UK and did not update your UKVI account, update it first and allow time for the change to show.
  3. Generate a share code close to the appointment. It lasts 90 days, which should cover processing of up to 45 days.
  4. Download the status page showing your photo, permission type and end date, and bring both.

Your UK permission should usually run at least 3 months beyond your return. Italy’s London consulate asks for that on its main visa page (some of its category pages say 1 month). Several countries set 1 month: Germany asks for permission valid 1 month after the trip ends, Greece 1 month after you leave the Schengen area, and Poland 1 month after the visa expires. Graduate route holders and people near the end of a Skilled Worker visa are most often caught out. If an extension is still pending, your current permission may look too short to the consulate, so plan the trip for after the grant where possible. Our eVisa and share code guide covers each step.

Does the 2024 India cascade apply if you live in the UK?

No. The cascade the European Commission adopted for Indian nationals on 18 April 2024 applies only to Indians residing in India who apply there. It was widely reported in India, so many UK residents assume it covers them.

Under that regime, two Schengen visas obtained and lawfully used in the previous three years can lead to a two-year multiple-entry visa, and then usually a five-year one. Applying from the UK, you fall under the standard Visa Code cascade instead:

Your recent history What the consulate may issue
Three Schengen visas obtained and lawfully used in the previous two years Multiple-entry visa valid for 1 year
A 1-year multiple-entry visa lawfully used, within the previous two years Multiple-entry visa valid for 2 years
A 2-year multiple-entry visa lawfully used, within the previous three years Multiple-entry visa valid for up to 5 years

Visas you used while living in India, from any Schengen country, still count. “Lawfully used” means no overstays and no visa from one country used mainly for another. A visa cannot outlast your passport, and consulates often cap it at the end of your UK permission. The cascade is a minimum, not a ceiling: ask for multiple entry on the form and explain why, for example regular visits to family in Germany. Our multiple-entry cascade guide has more detail.

What should Indian applicants add to the standard checklist?

The core Schengen visa documents checklist applies to you. These additions deal with the issues that most often hold up Indian applications.

  • Old passports. A passport renewed in the UK is a new book with a new number. Bring cancelled passports holding earlier Schengen, UK or US visas, or clear copies of those pages and the entry stamps.
  • Name format. Some Indian passports print one name with a blank surname field, and the last page lists a parent’s or spouse’s name. Complete the application form exactly as the data page is printed and match bookings, insurance and the employer letter to it. Where UK records differ, such as a payslip with the name order reversed, explain it in your cover letter.
  • Certificates from India. Marriage and birth certificates matter for joint family applications and for dependants. Anything in Hindi or another regional language needs a translation; Spain asks for a sworn translation into Spanish if it is not in English. Spain expects documents issued outside the UK and EU to be legalised or apostilled, and Italy asks for documents issued outside the UK to be translated into English or Italian and legalised. India is a party to the Apostille Convention, and apostilles are issued in India by the Ministry of External Affairs, usually after state-level verification, so start weeks ahead.
  • Children born in the UK. Use the full UK birth certificate listing both parents. If only one parent travels, bring the other parent’s signed consent and a copy of their passport.
  • Dependants’ funding. A dependant partner without their own income should include the main applicant’s employer letter, payslips and statements, plus a short sponsorship letter. See our guide to Schengen visas for dependants.

How much money do Indian applicants need to show?

The same as any other applicant, and it is assessed mainly from UK bank statements. Several countries publish a minimum per person; others look for a steady pattern that comfortably covers the trip.

Country Published guide (per person) Example: 10 days, 1 adult
Spain €122.10 a day, minimum €1,098.90 (2026) €1,221
France €65 a day with hotels booked, €120 without €650 with hotels
Italy Sliding table; €44.93 a day for 6-10 days alone €449.30
Netherlands €55 a day €550
Portugal €75 per entry plus €40 a day €475
Greece At least £40 a day in your UK current account (GVCW checklist) £400

Show the money for every traveller: a couple and a child going to Spain for 10 days need €3,663 between them. Savings or property in India can support your file, but treat Indian accounts as extra evidence, not your main proof. A large transfer from family in India shortly before you apply invites questions unless you explain and evidence it. Our bank statements guide explains what officers check.

Do you need a visa to change planes in Europe on the way to India?

Usually not for a straightforward airside connection, but the rules for Indian passport holders are set country by country. India is not on the EU-wide list of nationalities that always need an airport transit visa, and France and Germany, which both used to impose one nationally, have now dropped it:

Hub country Airport transit visa for Indian passports Covers
France (for example Paris Charles de Gaulle) Not required since 10 April 2026 Staying airside and flying on to a non-Schengen country
Germany (for example Frankfurt, Munich) Not required since 3 June 2026 Staying airside at an airport with an international transit area

Both changes are confirmed on official pages (France in India and the German missions in the UK), but they are recent, so confirm the current position with your airline before you book.

If you leave the transit area, collect bags, change terminals through passport control or connect through two Schengen airports, you need a full Schengen visa. UK residence status is not on the EU’s list of permits that automatically exempt holders from airport transit visas. Check with your airline for the exact route before booking.

What goes wrong most often for Indian applicants?

Most problems come from timing and consistency rather than eligibility.

  • Short UK permission. A Graduate visa ending soon after the trip can lead to a refusal or a visa limited to the trip dates.
  • Wrong centre. Your address, not the nearest city, decides where you submit for Spain and Portugal, and for Germany if you live in Scotland. If you have moved recently, bring a tenancy agreement or council tax bill.
  • Peak seasons. Easter, the summer holidays and the Diwali and Christmas breaks fill slots quickly. Apply up to 6 months ahead, and no later than 15 calendar days before travel; see our processing time guide.
  • Mismatched documents. Different name orders, an old passport number on the eVisa or insurance in a different spelling slow files down.
  • Wrong main destination. The visa must come from the country where you spend most nights.

If you are refused, our guide to Schengen visa refusals explains the appeal routes and when to reapply.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indian citizens with ILR in the UK need a Schengen visa?

Yes. Indefinite Leave to Remain, settled status or a long UK work visa does not change your Schengen visa requirement, which depends only on your passport. An Indian national with ILR still needs a short-stay Schengen visa for every trip to Europe. Only once you naturalise as a British citizen and travel on a British passport can you visit for up to 90 days in 180 without one.

Does the 2024 Schengen cascade for Indians apply if I live in the UK?

No. The European Commission's decision of 18 April 2024 covers Indian nationals residing in India who apply there. If you apply from the UK, the standard Visa Code cascade applies instead, normally starting with a one-year multiple-entry visa after three visas lawfully used in two years. Visas you used while living in India still count as travel history.

My Indian passport has no surname. Will that cause problems?

It can if your documents disagree. Some Indian passports print a single name with the surname field blank. Complete the Schengen form exactly as the data page is printed, and make sure your flight and hotel bookings, insurance certificate and employer letter use the same spelling and order. If your UK documents show your name differently, explain it in one line in your cover letter.

Should I bring my old Indian passport to the Schengen visa appointment?

Yes, if it holds earlier Schengen, UK, US or other visas. A passport renewed in the UK is a new book with a new number, so your travel history stays in the old one. Bring the cancelled passport, or clear copies of its visa pages and entry stamps, so the consulate can see that earlier visas were used properly. This matters most for multiple-entry decisions.

I live in Leicester or Birmingham. Which visa centre do I use?

It depends on the country. Spain and Portugal assign the Midlands to their Manchester consulates, so you submit in Manchester (or Edinburgh for Portugal), not London. France lets you use any TLScontact centre, and the Netherlands has a VFS centre in the Birmingham area (check the current address on the VFS site). Check the jurisdiction rule on the country page before you book, and bring proof of your current address.

Do I need a visa to change planes in Germany or France on my way to India?

Usually not for a simple airside connection. France dropped its airport transit visa requirement for Indian passport holders on 10 April 2026 and Germany followed on 3 June 2026. Both exemptions cover only passengers who stay in the international transit area and fly on to a non-Schengen country. If you leave the transit zone, collect baggage or connect through a second Schengen airport, you need a full Schengen visa.
