Italy Visa from the UK: Appointments, Checklist & Fees

UK residents who need an Italy visa apply in person through VFS Global in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, and the Consulate General of Italy in London decides. The fee is €90 (€45 for children 6-11) plus a VFS service charge. Processing takes at least 15 days and can take up to 45.

Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service. We prepare your Italy checklist, complete your form and review your documents; you book the appointment free in your own name.

Do UK residents need a visa for Italy?

It depends on your passport, not your UK address. British, Irish and EU citizens can visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Non-EU UK residents, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian or Chinese nationals, usually need a short-stay Schengen (type C) visa, even with Indefinite Leave to Remain, EU Settled Status or a Skilled Worker visa. One Italy visa covers all 29 Schengen countries, as long as Italy is your main destination.

You must be legally resident in the UK. The Consulate General of Italy in London says holders of a UK visit visa are not eligible to apply, so they would normally need to apply where they live (see our guide to applying on a UK visitor visa).

ETIAS, the €20 authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, has no launch date yet and does not apply to visa holders. Your UK status is now proved with a UKVI eVisa and share code, not a BRP: our eVisa and share code guide explains what to bring.

Italy visa appointments in the UK

Italy uses VFS Global to collect applications in the UK, at centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, and the Consulate General of Italy in London decides every UK application. The consulate says appointments are managed only by VFS, and every applicant must attend in person. VFS collects your file; the consulate decides.

Where you lodge depends on where you live:

Where you live Who decides VFS centre
England, Wales, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Channel Islands, Gibraltar Consulate General of Italy, London London or Manchester
Scotland, Northern Ireland Consulate General of Italy, London Edinburgh

The Consulate General in Edinburgh confirms that all UK visa services are provided by London and that Scotland and Northern Ireland residents book at the Edinburgh centre. The London consulate’s own visa page lists only its district (England, Wales, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Channel Islands, Gibraltar and South Georgia) and says applicants living outside it are not eligible, so if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland follow the Edinburgh consulate’s instruction and confirm with VFS when you book. Italy’s consulate in Manchester refers all visa enquiries to London. There is no Italy centre in Birmingham, Cardiff or Belfast.

London

The Consulate General lists the London centre at Ground floor, 8-20 Pocock Street, London SE1 0BW. It has the most capacity and the heaviest demand. Centres occasionally move, so always confirm the address on your appointment confirmation before you travel.

Manchester

The Consulate General lists the Manchester centre at 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH. It suits applicants from the North of England, the Midlands and North Wales. The decision is still made in London, so allow a little extra time.

Edinburgh

The Consulate General lists the Edinburgh centre as the VFS Joint Visa Application Centre, 1 Rennie’s Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT. Applicants from Northern Ireland should leave room for flight or ferry delays on the day.

Booking your appointment

Book only through VFS Global, using the link on the Consulate General’s visa page or the VFS Italy UK website, and follow the booking route VFS sets out there. If VFS directs you to its Italy Global mobile app, download it only through the link on the VFS page so you use the genuine app. Booking on the official system is free and is made in your own name: the only VFS charge is its service fee. Register with your own email and phone number, and enter each applicant’s details exactly as they appear in the passport you will travel on. Make one booking per applicant, and add family members carefully so each person has their own slot.

Demand peaks ahead of spring, summer and Christmas travel. We are not aware of a published slot-release day, so check at different times of day, and look at Manchester as well if you live in England or Wales.

Note: Schengen Visa Support does not book, hold or supply appointments, and nobody can legitimately sell you one. We explain how the official booking system works, help you complete the booking in your own name and make sure your file is ready for the day.

On the day

Arrive on time and expect security checks; follow the instructions in your confirmation about what you may bring. The consulate warns that a file missing any required document will not be accepted and you will have to book again. VFS checks your file, takes the fees and records fingerprints and a photo. Every applicant attends in person, including children, though under-12s do not give fingerprints, and fingerprints from a Schengen visa in the last 59 months can sometimes be reused. Any optional VFS extras do not speed up the decision. Reports that Italy went fully digital in 2026 are not reflected on the consulate’s page, which still requires in-person attendance. Your passport stays with the consulate until the decision and can be collected from VFS or posted back.

Italy visa document checklist for UK residents

Italy’s checklist follows the Schengen standard, but the Consulate General in London adds rules of its own: a 6-month limit on marriage certificates, notarised consent for children, a fixed funds table, an insurer’s letter and its own hosting form. Bring originals plus one photocopy, with a complete set for every applicant.

Your passport must have been issued in the last 10 years, be valid at least 3 months beyond your return date and have two blank visa pages. For your UK status, the consulate’s main visa page asks for validity of at least 3 months beyond the last day of your trip (some category pages say 1 month), so plan for 3 months: print your eVisa status and bring a valid share code. Expired BRPs are not proof of status. You also need one passport-style photo, full face on a white background, taken within the last 6 months.

Insurance must be issued in the UK or a Schengen country and come with a letter from the insurer confirming at least €30,000 of medical, hospital and repatriation cover in every Schengen state for the whole stay (see our travel insurance guide). Travel must be a return reservation printed directly from the airline, rail or bus operator, showing your name, dates, route and price; if you drive, bring ferry or Eurotunnel reservations. Hotels must be fully booked for every night. Bank statements are your personal UK statements for the last 3 months, showing your name and address, with at least one account showing salary, pension or Universal Credit paid in. A one-page cover letter is also required.

If you stay with friends or family, your host signs an invitation addressed to the consulate, using its Proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form (dichiarazione di ospitalità), with a copy of their ID or passport showing their signature, plus their Italian residence permit if they are not an EU citizen. Certificates issued outside the UK must be translated into English or Italian and legalised; certificates from another Schengen country are accepted only in multilingual format. Nationals of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and Yemen, and holders of travel documents coded XXA or XXB, must show both parents’ full names on a birth certificate or consular declaration.

Employed

An employer letter dated within the last month, giving the company registration number, your start date, job title, annual salary and approved leave, plus your last 3 payslips, which should match the salary credits on your statements.

Self-employed

A signed letter from your accountant, bank or solicitor, showing their registration number, confirming the nature of your business and the annual income you draw, plus your latest HMRC self-assessment form. For a business trip, the consulate also asks for your certificate of incorporation and last 3 months’ business bank statements. Our self-employed guide has more.

Students

A recent signed letter from your school, college or university showing your course, weekly hours and attendance. If your parents pay, add their sponsorship letter, bank statements and proof of relationship (student guide).

Retired

Proof of your pension (the consulate’s wording is a copy of your retirement compensation from social security), such as your award letter or annual statement, and bank statements showing the pension arriving each month.

A signed sponsorship letter from the person paying, their last 3 months’ statements and payslips, a passport copy and proof of relationship. If you rely on a marriage or civil partnership certificate, the consulate will not accept one issued more than 6 months ago, so order a fresh copy from the register office or GRO first.

Children

A full birth certificate naming both parents, copies of both parents’ passports and written consent from both parents agreeing to the trip and accepting financial responsibility for it. If one or both parents will not attend, the consent must be notarised by a UK notary; a parent living abroad has it notarised by the Italian consulate in their country. The consulate also asks for a school attendance letter, dated within the last month, signed by the head teacher and addressed to the Italian Consulate in London. See our children’s visa guide.

How much money do you need for an Italy visa?

Italy sets a fixed minimum: the means of subsistence table published by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based on a Ministry of the Interior directive of 1 March 2000. The figures are per person and sit on top of what you have already paid for flights and accommodation.

Length of stay Travelling alone Each person in a group of two or more
1-5 days €269.60 in total €212.81 in total
6-10 days €44.93 per day €26.33 per day
11-20 days €51.64 fixed, plus €36.67 per day €25.82 fixed, plus €22.21 per day
Over 20 days €206.58 fixed, plus €27.89 per day €118.79 fixed, plus €17.04 per day

Worked examples: one person for 7 days needs about €315 (7 x €44.93); one person for 14 days about €565 (€51.64 + 14 x €36.67); a couple for 8 days about €211 each, €421 together.

Meeting the number is not enough on its own. The consulate asks for statements that show regular income, and a lump sum paid in just before applying raises more questions than it answers. Our bank statements guide shows what officers check.

Italy visa fees from the UK

The Italy visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, with children under 6 free. VFS adds its own service charge on top.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Consular visa fee, adult (12+) €90, charged in pounds Italian consulate (collected by VFS) At the appointment
Consular visa fee, child 6-11 €45, charged in pounds Italian consulate (collected by VFS) At the appointment
Consular visa fee, child under 6 Free - -
VFS service charge Check the current amount with VFS VFS Global At the appointment, or earlier if VFS asks for it when you book
Optional VFS extras (if offered) Varies VFS Global Only if you choose them
Our admin support fee Quoted separately, see pricing Schengen Visa Support When you instruct us

The Consulate General in London says VFS centres take the fee in British pounds only, by cash or card. Check the current sterling amount with VFS and bring a back-up payment method. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. Our fee guide covers reductions and exemptions.

How long does an Italy visa take from the UK?

The consulate says the minimum processing time is 15 days and a Schengen visa can take up to 45 days, depending on the type of visa and your nationality. It also says processing cannot be rushed, and no VFS extra changes that.

All UK files are decided in London, so allow a little extra time if you lodge in Manchester or Edinburgh. Allow longer before Easter, summer and Christmas, when appointment slots and consular staff are stretched.

When What to do
6 months before travel Earliest you can lodge; start looking for an appointment
8-10 weeks before Gather documents; order a new marriage certificate, the host’s form or a notarised consent if needed
4-8 weeks before Ideal time to attend your appointment
15 calendar days before Latest date to lodge
After lodging Decision in at least 15 days, up to 45; track with your VFS reference

Book flights and hotels you can change until the visa is in your passport. Our processing time guide explains what delays look like.

Italy visa types for UK residents

Most UK residents need a short-stay type C visa for tourism, visiting family or friends, or business. The purpose changes the supporting documents, not the fee.

Tourist. Holidays in Rome, Florence, Venice or the Amalfi Coast, including multi-country trips where Italy has the most nights. If you travel between Schengen countries, the consulate wants reservations for each leg.

Family or friends visit. Your host signs the Proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form, with a copy of their ID or passport (and Italian residence permit if they are not an EU citizen). If they also pay for the trip, add their financial evidence and explain the relationship in a sponsor letter. Guidance on family visits covers the wider rules.

Business. An invitation from the Italian company dated within the last month, using the consulate’s business invitation letter template, with a copy of the signer’s ID and the company’s business register extract (Visura Camerale), plus a letter from your UK employer confirming the trip and who pays. See our business visa guide.

Short study, medical treatment, sport and culture. Enrolment and fee receipts for courses under 90 days; a hospital or clinic letter with costs for treatment; an organiser’s invitation for events.

Students on holiday. UK students apply as tourists, adding a recent letter from their school, college or university.

Airport transit. The London consulate says that since 28 June 2024, UK residents holding a valid UK Biometric Residence Permit no longer need an airport transit visa to change planes in Italy, but a UK visa does not give the same exemption. Because the page still refers to BRP cards, check with the consulate how it treats eVisa holders before booking a connection. Leaving the airport requires a type C visa.

Stays over 90 days, for work, study or family reunion, need a national (type D) visa, which follows different rules and can take up to 90 days to process. Holders must report to the Questura to apply for a permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days of arriving.

Tourist

Holidays and sightseeing in Italy, including touring several Schengen countries where Italy is the main destination.

Family or friends visit

Staying with relatives or friends living in Italy, supported by the host's signed invitation (the consulate's Proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form) and a copy of their ID or passport.

Business

Meetings, conferences, trade fairs and contract negotiations, supported by an invitation from the Italian company, its business register extract (Visura Camerale) and a letter from your UK employer.

Short study

Language schools and courses of up to 90 days, with proof of enrolment and payment.

Medical treatment

Treatment at an Italian hospital or clinic, with a letter from the facility confirming the appointment and costs.

Sport or cultural events

Taking part in competitions, performances or cultural events, with an invitation from the organiser.

Italy-specific tips

Most wasted Italy appointments come from details the London consulate is strict about. These are the points that catch UK applicants out.

  • Order a new marriage certificate. A certificate issued more than 6 months ago is not accepted, even if the wedding was recent. This matters when a spouse sponsors you or a child travels with one parent.
  • Notarise children’s consent. A signed letter is not enough if a parent stays at home: it must be notarised by a UK notary.
  • Get an insurer’s letter. A policy schedule alone may not be enough: the consulate asks for a letter from the insurer confirming cover in every Schengen state.
  • Print tickets from the operator. The consulate wants travel reservations printed directly from the airline, rail or bus company, showing your name, dates, route and price.
  • Match the host’s form to your application. Make sure the address and dates on the hosting form match your application form.
  • Leave time for legalisation. Birth or marriage certificates from outside the UK need translating into English or Italian and legalising, which can take weeks.
  • Plan for EES at the border. The Entry/Exit System is now fully in force, so expect fingerprint and face registration on your first entry. See our EES and ETIAS guide.

Why Italy visas are refused (and how to avoid it)

Most Italy refusals come down to doubts about the purpose of the trip, the money behind it or your ties to the UK. Almost all are avoidable with a consistent, complete file.

  • Funds below the subsistence table, or unexplained recent deposits. Check the table for your exact length of stay and explain any lump sums.
  • Italy is not clearly the main destination. If you spend more nights in France or Switzerland, apply there instead.
  • Gaps or mismatches between the form, hotel or host dates and travel bookings.
  • Missing or out-of-date paperwork: an unsigned hosting form, an old marriage certificate or a consent letter that is not notarised.
  • Insurance below €30,000, excluding a Schengen state, starting a day late or without the insurer’s letter.
  • UK status that ends too soon after your return. Plan the trip so your current permission covers the margin, or wait for renewed permission before applying.

If you are refused, the decision must give reasons. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a visa refusal can be challenged before the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR Lazio) in Rome within 60 days of notification. The ministry says the appeal is lodged through a lawyer, and that refusals of visas for family reasons go to the ordinary court instead, so take advice from an Italian lawyer before you decide. For most people a fresh application that answers each reason is quicker and cheaper. Our refusal guide compares both routes, and we can review a refusal and prepare a re-application; see how it works.

Italy visa FAQs

Can I apply for an Italy visa in Manchester if I live in London?

Yes. The Consulate General of Italy in London handles visa applications for England and Wales and lists both the London and Manchester VFS centres, so you can lodge at either. The decision is made in London either way, so allow a little extra time for a Manchester file. Residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland are directed to the Edinburgh centre.

How do I book an Italy visa appointment in the UK?

The consulate says appointments are managed only by its partner, VFS Global. Use the VFS link on the consulate's visa page or the VFS Italy UK website and follow the booking route VFS gives there. If VFS directs you to its Italy Global mobile app, download it only through the link on the VFS page. Book in your own name, with details exactly as in your passport, one slot per applicant.

Can I apply for an Italy visa with an eVisa share code?

Yes. BRPs have expired, so you prove your UK status with your UKVI eVisa. The consulate asks for your UK eVisa share code with a printout, and a share code lasts 90 days. Its main visa page asks for UK status valid at least 3 months beyond the last day of your trip, while some category pages say 1 month, so plan for 3 months.

Can I apply for an Italy visa while on a UK visitor visa?

No. The Consulate General of Italy in London states that holders of a UK short-stay visit visa are not eligible to apply, and that you must be resident in its district. You would normally need to apply where you live. Students, workers, family visa holders and people with settled status or ILR can apply from the UK.

How much money do I need in my bank account for an Italy visa?

Italy uses a fixed means of subsistence table. A single traveller staying 1 to 5 days needs at least €269.60 in total, 6 to 10 days €44.93 per day, and 14 days about €565. Lower per-person figures apply to groups of two or more. The consulate also asks for 3 months of UK statements, with at least one account showing salary, pension or Universal Credit paid in.

Can I travel if my Italy visa decision is still pending?

No. You cannot enter Italy or the wider Schengen area until the visa is issued and your passport is returned with the visa inside. The consulate says processing takes at least 15 days and up to 45, and cannot be rushed, so lodge early and book flights and hotels you can change. If your travel date arrives first, move the trip.

What is the Italian hosting declaration (dichiarazione di ospitalità)?

If you stay with friends or relatives instead of a hotel, your host signs an invitation addressed to the Italian Consulate, using the Proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form on the Consulate General in London's visa page. They add a copy of their ID or passport showing their signature, and their Italian residence permit if they are not an EU citizen.

Does parental consent need to be notarised for an Italy visa?

Yes, if one or both parents will not attend the appointment. The Consulate General in London says the consent must be notarised by a UK notary, or by the Italian consulate in the country where an absent parent lives. Bring copies of both parents' passports, a full birth certificate and a recent school letter. Children attend in person.

Italy or France: which visa do I apply for if I visit both?

Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If you spend 6 nights in Italy and 4 in France, apply to Italy through VFS. If the nights are equal, the London consulate says to apply to the country where you first enter the Schengen area. Applying to Italy for a trip mainly elsewhere is a common reason for refusal.

How do I pay the Italy visa fee at VFS?

You pay at the centre on the day. The Consulate General in London says VFS centres accept the visa fee in British pounds only, by cash or card, while the consulate's own visa office takes cash only. The €90 adult fee is charged as a sterling amount, so check the current figure with VFS. The VFS service charge is paid on top.

Can I appeal an Italy visa refusal?

Yes. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a visa refusal can be challenged before the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR Lazio) within 60 days of notification. It is a court case in Italy, so take advice from an Italian lawyer first. Many applicants instead reapply with evidence that answers each reason on the refusal form. The visa fee is not refunded.
