Portugal Visa from the UK: Appointments, Checklist & Fees

UK residents who need a Portugal Schengen visa apply through VFS Global in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, and your county decides the centre. The fee is €90 per adult plus a £32.85 VFS service fee, and decisions take at least two weeks.

Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service. We prepare your Portugal checklist, complete your form and review your documents; you book the appointment free in your own name.

Do UK residents need a visa for Portugal?

It depends on your passport, not on where you live. British, Irish and EU/EEA citizens can visit Portugal for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Most non-EU nationals living in the UK, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Chinese or South African citizens on a Skilled Worker, student, family or settled status, need a Portugal Schengen visa, applied for in the UK.

You need to be resident in the UK to apply here. VFS states that a UK residence permit is required; people who are in the UK legally but not resident, such as UK visitor-visa holders, may apply only for essential travel (business, study, family reunification, health or humanitarian reasons), subject to the Portuguese mission’s approval. In practice, visitors apply in their home country.

You prove your status with a UKVI eVisa share code, as all BRPs have expired. See our eVisa share code guide.

ETIAS, the €20 travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers such as British citizens, has no confirmed launch date, and it never applies to anyone travelling on a Schengen visa. Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal and of the Schengen area, so the same visa covers island holidays.

Portugal visa appointments in the UK

Portugal visa applications in the UK are submitted in person, by appointment only, at VFS Global centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The centre is not your choice: your county of residence puts you under either the Consulate General of Portugal in London or the Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester, and that decides where you may submit.

VFS publishes a county list for each consulate, and each consulate publishes its own jurisdiction. The summary below follows those lists.

You live in Deciding consulate Where you submit
Greater London, City of London, Middlesex Consulate General, London VFS London only
South East and South West (Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, Bristol, Gloucestershire) Consulate General, London VFS London only
East of England (Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk, Suffolk), Jersey and Guernsey Consulate General, London VFS London only
Midlands (West Midlands, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire) Consulate General, Manchester VFS Manchester or Edinburgh
North of England (Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Humberside, Durham, Cleveland, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear) Consulate General, Manchester VFS Manchester or Edinburgh
Scotland and Northern Ireland Consulate General, Manchester VFS Manchester or Edinburgh
Wales or the Isle of Man Consulate General, Manchester (per the consulate’s own jurisdiction page) Not named on the VFS county list: confirm with VFS before booking

Important: VFS says you must live in one of the listed counties to use a centre, and your bank statements must show your address, so make sure your documents show an address in the right jurisdiction. If you have recently moved, book for your current address and make sure your documents show it.

London

VFS London is the only centre for the Consulate General’s jurisdiction, so there is no second centre to fall back on: book as early as your travel plans allow. Use the address printed on your appointment confirmation, as VFS moves centres from time to time.

Manchester

VFS Manchester is the main centre for the Midlands, the North, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Files submitted here go to the Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester, not London. Applicants from Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield all come here, so slots before school holidays go quickly.

Edinburgh

VFS Edinburgh is a satellite centre: check the address on your confirmation. Any Manchester-jurisdiction resident can use it, not only people in Scotland, so it is worth checking when Manchester is full. VFS sends Edinburgh files to its Manchester office, which passes them to the consulate the following day, and says to add two days to the minimum processing time.

How to book

  1. Book online on the VFS Global Portugal UK site, using your own email address.
  2. Choose the centre that matches your county and the short-stay (Schengen) category.
  3. Enter each applicant’s details exactly as in their passport. Every applicant, including children and infants, must attend in person.
  4. Pick a date and time and keep the confirmation, which shows the centre address.

Booking is free and made in the applicant’s own name. Availability changes as new dates are released and others cancel, so check at different times. VFS warns that around Easter, July to August and Christmas appointments are booked very quickly, because the consulate processes a fixed number of applications each day. Do not book duplicate slots for the same person.

On the day, arrive a little early and hand in your file at the counter: VFS asks you to show originals and hand in photocopies. You pay the fees, then give ten fingerprints and a digital photograph, unless your fingerprints were collected for an earlier Schengen visa less than 59 months ago. Children under 12 are not fingerprinted. Your passport stays with the application. Any optional paid extras VFS offers are listed on its site and do not affect the decision.

Note: Schengen Visa Support does not book, hold or supply visa appointments. We explain how the official VFS system works, help you complete the booking in your own name, advise on the right centre and make sure your application is ready for the day.

Portugal visa document checklist for UK residents

Portugal works from the standard Schengen list, but VFS applies it strictly: you show originals at the counter and hand in photocopies, unless a document must be submitted as an original. VFS asks for recent supporting documents (for children’s files it says no more than one month old) and notes the list is not exhaustive, so the consulate can ask for more.

A few items need particular care:

  • The form is completed online, printed and signed twice: at item 37 and directly below the declaration at the end. A missing second signature can stop the file being accepted.
  • The photograph must be a camera print on photo paper, no more than six months old, on a white or off-white background, and glued to the form. Light background, full face, no smile, no sunglasses and no head covering unless worn for religious reasons; VFS treats a non-compliant photo as an incomplete application and asks you to take new photos at the centre.
  • Your passport must be issued in the last 10 years, valid at least three months beyond your departure from Schengen, with two blank pages.
  • UK status: an eVisa share code and a printout, with permission valid at least one month beyond your return. That is shorter than many Schengen states ask for, but a permission ending soon after the trip still invites questions.
  • Insurance must be in your name, valid across the whole Schengen area for every day of the trip, with at least €30,000 cover including medical emergencies and repatriation.
  • Accommodation: hotel bookings for every night, or a certified termo de responsabilidade if you stay with a host.

The termo de responsabilidade

If someone is hosting you in Portugal or paying for the trip, they can complete a termo de responsabilidade (term of responsibility); Portugal’s Foreign Ministry describes it as signed by a Portuguese citizen or legal resident. VFS accepts it only if the signature is recognised by a notary, lawyer or solicitor, or signed in front of the receiving officer. A private host adds a copy of their passport or ID and the property deeds or rental agreement in their name. A sponsor covering costs adds their passport or ID, three months of bank statements and their latest tax return or proof of employment. Allow time for the certified form to reach you.

Employed

VFS asks for a signed, dated employer letter addressed to the consulate, issued within the last three months, plus three months of payslips. Adding your role, salary and exact leave dates, matching your flights, makes the link between your job and the trip clear.

Self-employed

VFS asks for a signed, dated letter from your accountant or solicitor, addressed to the consulate and issued within the last three months, your latest self-assessment tax return and, if you trade through a company, the Companies House certificate of incorporation. See our self-employed guide.

Students

A signed, dated enrolment letter from your UK school, college or university, issued within the last three months, plus proof of funds: your own bank statements, or a certified termo de responsabilidade from a sponsor with their documents.

Retired

A document confirming your pension amount, issued within the last three months, and bank statements showing the pension arriving.

VFS describes sponsorship through a certified termo de responsabilidade, with the sponsor’s passport or ID, three months of their bank statements and their latest tax return or proof of employment. If your sponsor lives in the UK rather than Portugal, ask VFS or the consulate what they accept before you book.

Children

A full birth certificate showing both parents, a form signed by the parents or guardians, signed and dated consent from both parents, and both parents’ original passports at the appointment (VFS accepts a notarised copy of the bio page for a parent who cannot attend). If only one parent has custody or one has died, add the court order or death certificate. VFS says a minor’s passport must be valid at least 90 days beyond the return date, and children must attend in person. A birth certificate not in English or Portuguese needs a translation by a certified translator in the UK. VFS’s minors checklist also asks for a parent’s last three months of bank statements with a closing balance of at least £50 per day of stay plus any unpaid travel and accommodation costs, and says the supporting documents for a child’s file should be no more than one month old.

How much money do you need for a Portugal visa?

Portugal publishes a guide figure: €75 for each entry plus €40 for each day of your stay. VFS says the available balance on your most recent bank statement must meet it. Alternatively, a certified termo de responsabilidade from a Portuguese citizen or legal resident can cover your costs.

Trip (single entry) Guide minimum
5 days €275
7 days €355
10 days €475
14 days €635
21 days €915

These are floors, not targets. The officer looks at whether three months of statements show steady income and a balance consistent with the trip you describe. A large unexplained deposit shortly before you apply raises more doubt than a modest, stable balance, so explain any one-off sums (a bonus, a sale, a family gift) in your cover letter. If a host covers costs, their certified termo de responsabilidade and income evidence carry part of the weight. Our bank statements guide explains what officers check.

Portugal visa fees from the UK

You pay two charges at the centre: the €90 Schengen visa fee, set by EU law and paid in pounds at the current exchange rate, and VFS’s own service fee, listed at £32.85 per application including VAT. Neither is refunded if the visa is refused. VFS takes card at every centre and cash only in London.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Visa fee, adult (12 and over) €90, in pounds at the current exchange rate Consulate (collected by VFS) At your appointment
Visa fee, child aged 6 to 11 €45 Consulate (collected by VFS) At your appointment
Visa fee, child under 6 Free - -

VFS notes that organised school or student groups travelling with teachers can have the visa fee waived with a formal invitation from a Portuguese educational institution. For the wider picture, see our Schengen visa fee guide.

How long does a Portugal visa take from the UK?

VFS gives a minimum processing time of two weeks, and more than three weeks for nationalities that need prior consultation with other Schengen states. Edinburgh adds two days, and the legal deadline can be extended to 45 days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny is needed. A request for more documents or an interview can also add time.

Plan backwards from your departure date, and book early for Easter, July to August and Christmas, when VFS warns appointments go very quickly.

Step When
Earliest you can submit 6 months before departure
Start your file and book a slot 8 to 10 weeks before departure
Recommended appointment 6 to 8 weeks before departure
Minimum processing (London, Manchester) 2 weeks; 3+ weeks for prior-consultation nationalities
Minimum processing (Edinburgh) Add 2 days
Latest you can submit 15 calendar days before departure

Keep the receipt VFS gives you, as its reference number is what you need to follow progress with VFS. When your passport comes back, check the sticker at once: dates, number of entries and the spelling of your name. More in our processing time guide.

Portugal visa types for UK residents

Most UK residents apply for a short-stay (type C) Schengen visa, which covers up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all 29 Schengen countries. The purpose you state shapes the supporting documents.

  • Tourist: holidays in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira or the Azores, with hotel bookings and an itinerary showing Portugal as the main destination.
  • Family or friends visit: if your host provides accommodation or money, they complete a certified termo de responsabilidade. A simple invitation letter does not replace it.
  • Business: a UK employer letter explaining the purpose and who pays, plus an invitation from the Portuguese company or organiser, or proof of registration for a fair or conference.
  • Cultural, sports or medical: letters from the organiser, club or hospital, with costs and dates.
  • Short study: courses of up to 90 days with an enrolment letter. UK students taking a holiday in Portugal apply as tourists, with their enrolment letter as proof of occupation.
  • Airport transit: only certain nationalities need one to change planes in a Portuguese airport.

Stays over 90 days, for work, study or residence, need a Portuguese national visa, also submitted at VFS by appointment. VFS lists a €110 fee plus the £32.85 service fee, submission up to three months before travel and processing of at least one month, and at least three months in some cases. Check the official checklist for your national visa category: VFS says UK public documents such as birth certificates and ACRO criminal record certificates must be apostilled, and your UK permission must outlast the visa you apply for. See our guide on which country to apply to if your trip covers several states.

Tourist

Holidays in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira or the Azores, including touring trips where Portugal is the main destination.

Family or friends visit

Staying with relatives or friends in Portugal, usually supported by an invitation and, where the host provides accommodation or funds, a certified termo de responsabilidade.

Business

Meetings, conferences, trade fairs and short business trips, backed by a letter from your UK employer and an invitation from the Portuguese company or event organiser.

Short study or training

Courses, language programmes or unpaid training of up to 90 days, with an enrolment letter from the Portuguese institution.

Cultural, sports or medical

Events, competitions, performances or planned medical treatment in Portugal, supported by letters from the organiser or hospital.

Airport transit

Only required for certain nationalities changing planes in a Portuguese airport without entering Portugal.

Long stay (national visa)

Stays over 90 days, such as work, study or residence, need a Portuguese national visa rather than a Schengen visa. VFS lists a €110 fee and at least one month's processing.

Portugal-specific tips

Most Portugal problems come from the jurisdiction rule and the host paperwork rather than the core documents.

  • Check your county before anything else. Birmingham and Coventry fall under Manchester, not London. A slot at the wrong centre is wasted.
  • Get the termo certified early. The signature must be recognised by a notary, lawyer or solicitor, or signed before the receiving officer. VFS says it is not accepted otherwise.
  • Use Edinburgh as an overflow if you are under the Manchester consulate and Manchester has no dates; just add two days to processing.
  • Keep documents fresh. VFS wants a bank statement end balance dated within the last month and employer letters issued within the last three months, so gather them close to the appointment.
  • Bring a card to Manchester or Edinburgh. VFS lists cash as accepted only in London.
  • Glue, do not staple, the photo, and check it meets the light-background rule before you leave home.
  • Expect the Entry/Exit System on arrival. EES has been fully operational at Schengen external borders, including Portugal’s airports, since 10 April 2026, so your face and fingerprints are recorded at your first crossing. See our EES and ETIAS guide.

Why Portugal visas are refused (and how to avoid it)

Refusals usually come down to doubts about the purpose of the trip, your funds or your intention to return to the UK. The most common problems in Portuguese applications are:

  • Portugal is not the genuine main destination: the itinerary shows more nights elsewhere in Schengen.
  • Funds below the guide or unexplained: a balance under €75 per entry plus €40 a day, or a large deposit with no explanation.
  • An uncertified termo de responsabilidade, or a host whose own documents are missing.
  • UK permission ending too soon: less than one month beyond your return, or a pending extension with no evidence.
  • Inconsistent dates between the form, flights, hotels, insurance and employer letter.
  • Weak ties to the UK: an employer letter without leave dates, or no evidence of ongoing study or income.

If you are refused, the standard refusal form ticks the reasons and explains how to challenge the decision. Portugal’s Foreign Ministry lists three routes: a complaint to the decision-maker within 15 days, a hierarchical appeal to the Foreign Minister within three months (both lodged at the consular post), or a court action at the Administrative Court of Lisbon within three months. It lists a €75 administrative charge per appeal, and visa fees are not refunded. Often the faster route is a new application that fixes the stated reason with stronger evidence. Our refusal guide explains both options.

Portugal visa FAQs

Do I need a visa for Portugal if I live in the UK?

It depends on your passport, not your UK residence. British, Irish and EU citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Nationals of countries such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, China and South Africa normally need a Schengen visa, even with settled status, a Skilled Worker visa or a student visa.

Can I apply for a Portugal visa in London if I live in Birmingham?

Generally no. The West Midlands, including Birmingham and Coventry, falls under the Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester, so you submit at VFS Manchester or VFS Edinburgh. VFS states that you must live in one of a consulate's listed counties to use its centres, so be ready to show your address. Booking London from a Manchester-jurisdiction county risks your file not being accepted.

Can I apply for a Portugal visa in Manchester if I live in London?

No. For a Portugal visa, residents of London, the South East, the South West, the East of England, Jersey and Guernsey fall under the Consulate General of Portugal in London, and VFS says they can submit only at VFS London. There is no second centre for this jurisdiction, so if London slots are scarce, book early rather than travelling north.

Can I apply for a Portugal visa with an eVisa share code?

Yes, and you must. All BRPs have expired, so you prove your UK status with a share code from the View and prove your immigration status service plus a printout of your status. VFS asks for UK residence valid at least one month beyond your return. A share code lasts 90 days, so create it in the fortnight before your appointment.

How much does a Portugal visa cost from the UK?

The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, and free for children under 6, paid in pounds at the current exchange rate. VFS Global adds its own service fee, listed at £32.85 per application including VAT. Any optional VFS extras are charged separately. VFS says cash is not accepted in Manchester or Edinburgh, and fees are not refunded if you are refused.

How much money do I need in my bank account for a Portugal visa?

Portugal's Foreign Ministry and VFS give the same guide: €75 for each entry plus €40 for each day of your stay. A single-entry, 10-day trip therefore points to at least €475. VFS says the available balance on your most recent statement must meet this, and three months of statements should show steady income rather than a sudden deposit.

Does the termo de responsabilidade have to be notarised?

It must be certified. VFS states that the signature is accepted only if it is recognised by a notary, lawyer or solicitor, or signed in front of the officer receiving the application. A private host also sends a copy of their passport or ID and the property deeds or rental agreement in their name; a host covering costs adds 3 months of bank statements and a tax return or proof of employment.

Can I travel if my Portugal visa decision is still pending?

No. You cannot travel on a pending Portugal visa application, and your passport stays with the application until a decision is made. VFS gives a minimum of two weeks, longer for prior-consultation nationalities, and individual cases can take up to 45 days. Avoid non-refundable bookings you cannot change until the visa is in your passport, then check its dates, entries and name spelling at once.

Can I apply for a Portugal visa while in the UK on a visitor visa?

Usually not. VFS states that a UK residence permit is required, and that people who are legally in the UK but not resident may apply only for essential travel (business, study, family reunification, health or humanitarian reasons), subject to the Portuguese mission's approval. Tourism is not on that list, so visitors normally apply from their country of residence.

Should I apply to Portugal or Spain if I visit both?

Apply to the country of your main destination, judged by length of stay or purpose. Seven nights in Lisbon and three in Seville means Portugal; a week in Madrid with a weekend in Porto means Spain. If no main destination can be identified, apply to the country whose external border you cross first. A Portugal-issued visa is normally valid across all 29 Schengen countries.

Is the Portugal visa appointment free?

Yes. Appointments are booked online on the VFS Global Portugal UK website in the applicant's own name, and the booking itself is free. You pay the visa fee and the VFS service fee when you submit. Anyone charging you for the slot itself is outside the official process, so enter your own details exactly as in your passport and do not rely on a booking made by someone else.

How do I appeal a Portugal visa refusal from the UK?

Portugal's Foreign Ministry lists three routes: a complaint to the decision-maker within 15 days, a hierarchical appeal to the Foreign Minister within three months, both lodged at the consular post, or a court action at the Administrative Court of Lisbon within three months. It lists a €75 administrative charge per appeal. Check the deadline on your refusal form.
