Schengen visa fee from the UK
The Schengen visa fee from the UK in 2026: €90 adults, €45 children 6-11, free under 6. What you pay in pounds, who is exempt, and the provider charges on top.
· 10 min read
UK residents who need a Hungary visa apply through VFS Global in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, and the Embassy of Hungary in London decides. The fee is €90 (charged as £80; £40 for children 6-11) plus VFS's service charge; decisions usually take 15 days. Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service: we prepare your checklist and review your documents; you book free in your own name.

How to book through the official system (free, in your own name) and what to bring on the day.
British, Irish and EU citizens do not need a visa to visit Hungary for up to 90 days in any 180. Whether you need one depends on your passport, not your UK status: many other nationals living in the UK do, even with settled status, a Skilled Worker visa or a family visa.
That includes nationals of India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, China, South Africa and the Philippines, among others. UK residence lets you apply from the UK rather than your home country. The Embassy of Hungary asks for a UK residence permit valid for at least 1 month beyond your departure from the Schengen area; see UK visa validity for a Schengen visa. VFS does not accept a UK visitor visa as residence, so on one you should normally apply in your home country instead (Schengen visas on a UK visitor visa).
You prove UK status with a UKVI eVisa share code, not a BRP (eVisa share code guide). ETIAS, the €20 authorisation for visa-exempt travellers such as British citizens, has no launch date and never replaces a visa. Non-EU travellers, visa holders and British citizens alike, now register fingerprints and a facial image with the Entry/Exit System on first arrival, including at Budapest airport.
Hungary short-stay applications in the UK are lodged in person at VFS Global, which runs centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The Embassy of Hungary in London decides every application, so there is no regional jurisdiction: you can use any centre, wherever you live.
VFS checks your file, takes fingerprints and a photo, collects the fees and forwards your application to the Embassy. It has no say in the outcome. VFS’s helpline is [email protected] or 0871 376 2101 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, as listed by the Embassy); the Embassy’s consular section in London uses [email protected], for example to book an appeal appointment.
The Embassy lists the London Joint Visa Application Centre at 66 Wilson Street, London EC2A 2JX. VFS says files lodged in London reach the Embassy the next working day, so this is the fastest route once you have a slot. VFS warns that appointments are booked very quickly around Easter, in July and August and at Christmas. Always follow the address and entry instructions on your booking confirmation.
The Embassy lists the Manchester Joint Visa Application Centre at 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH. It suits the North West, Yorkshire, North Wales and the Midlands, and is often the alternative when London is fully booked. VFS says files lodged in Manchester reach the Embassy after three working days, so allow about 2 extra working days compared with London.
The Embassy lists the Edinburgh Joint Visa Application Centre at 1 Reenie’s Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT. It is the natural choice for Scotland, Northern Ireland and North East England. As with Manchester, files reach the Embassy after three working days, so allow about 2 extra working days. Confirm the address on your booking confirmation, as visa centres do move.
| Centre | Usually suits | Who decides | Extra time |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | South of England, Wales, Midlands | Embassy of Hungary, London | None |
| Manchester | North West, Yorkshire, North Wales, Midlands | Embassy of Hungary, London | About 2 working days |
| Edinburgh | Scotland, Northern Ireland, North East England | Embassy of Hungary, London | About 2 working days |
The standard booking is free and always made in your own name. If your dates change, reschedule in your VFS account rather than booking a second slot. The Embassy’s page says VFS also takes walk-ins for family members of Hungarian nationals visiting family or friends; check with VFS before relying on this.
Important: We do not book, hold or supply appointments, and nobody can legitimately sell you a VFS Global slot. We help you create your account and complete the booking correctly in your own name on the official system, and prepare your file so it is ready for the day.
VFS warns that appointments go quickly around Easter, in the summer holidays (July and August) and at Christmas, which also covers the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Sziget festival and the Budapest Christmas markets. Check at different times of day, compare all three centres, and keep your file complete so you can take a short-notice cancellation.
Arrive on time with your confirmation, passport and documents in checklist order, with originals and a photocopy of each. Every applicant attends in person, including children, and VFS says children under 18 should be accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian. Staff check your file, take fingerprints (unless you are under 12 or gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months) and keep your passport. VFS’s Hungary page says fees can be paid by credit or debit card (not American Express) and that cash is accepted only in London, while the Embassy’s own page also lists postal orders; check the current payment methods with VFS before you go. Optional extras sold by VFS are conveniences only and do not affect the Embassy’s decision.
Hungary’s checklist is standard Schengen, but the Embassy expects every detail to line up: the dates on your form, insurance, bookings and employer letter must match, and every night in Hungary needs accommodation evidence. VFS asks for supporting documents to be recent, generally no older than 1 month.
Your passport must have been issued in the last 10 years, be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area and have at least two blank pages; bring copies of any previous Schengen visas. The photo should be one recent colour passport-size print, no older than 6 months, on a white or off-white background. Travel insurance must cover at least €30,000 in every Schengen state for every day of the trip; policies that start the day after departure are a common slip (see our travel insurance guide). For travel, VFS’s Hungary checklist asks for return tickets in your name covering the whole trip, including travel between Schengen countries; check the current checklist before buying.
The Hungary-specific item is the invitation. If you stay with family or friends, VFS’s checklist asks for a recently issued invitation letter from your host, signed and dated, with a copy of their passport or residence permit photo page, copies of both sides of their Hungarian address card and proof of your relationship. VFS also refers to an official sponsorship form (a certificate of board and lodging) as an alternative; if your host wants to use one, they should check how to obtain it in Hungary well before your appointment. Hungary’s foreign ministry adds that an invitation may also take the form of a notarial document, with a copy of the host’s ID or passport.
VFS says documents that are not in English may need translating before you apply, and asks for marriage certificates issued outside the EU and not in English or Hungarian to be translated by a certified translator in the UK. Bring originals with a photocopy of each. A short cover letter setting out your itinerary helps, especially for multi-country trips.
An employer letter on headed paper, signed, addressed to the Embassy and less than 1 month old, confirming your employment, plus your last 3 months’ payslips. It helps if it also gives your role, start date and approved leave covering the trip.
A signed letter, less than 1 month old, from your accountant, solicitor or bank manager confirming your self-employment, and your Companies House certificate of incorporation if you run a company. Tax returns and invoices help where accounts are thin. See our self-employed guide.
A signed enrolment letter on headed paper from your UK institution, less than 1 month old, and your own funds or a parent’s sponsorship letter and statements. Travel in the holidays; see our students guide.
A recent pension letter, for example from the Pension Service, or pension statements, plus 3 months of bank statements showing the pension arriving.
VFS accepts sponsorship by a spouse or registered partner: the marriage certificate, the partner’s passport, proof of their occupation and funds, and their signed, dated letter confirming sponsorship. Our invitation and sponsor letter guide has a structure to follow.
A birth certificate and, for a child travelling alone or with one parent, consent from the parents or legal guardian, both parents’ passports or certified copies of their photo pages, and a letter from the child’s UK school. In sole custody cases, bring the court ruling or other proof. See Schengen visas for children.

Get a document checkThere is no fixed bank balance for UK applicants. VFS’s Hungary guidance asks for your latest 3 months of UK current account statements showing your name, address and a closing balance dated within the last month, with enough to cover your stay in the Schengen area and your return home. Online banking printouts are also accepted.
In practice, those statements should show regular income and a balance that comfortably covers accommodation, food, local transport and the return journey, on top of your usual UK rent, bills and commitments. A large deposit shortly before you apply raises questions about where it came from, so explain any lump sum with evidence such as a sale receipt or gift letter.
If a host or sponsor is covering your costs, include their signed letter and proof of their means, but showing your own funds as well makes a stronger file. Hungary uses the forint, not the euro, but you show funds in pounds from UK accounts. Our guide to bank statements for a Schengen visa explains what officers look for.
The consular fee is €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11 and free for under-6s. The Embassy of Hungary in London sets a fixed sterling figure: £80 for adults and £40 for children, valid from 1 January 2026. VFS Global adds its own service charge per application, listed as £25 (VAT included) on its Hungary UK information page; the amount can change, so check it when you book.
| Fee | Amount | Paid to | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consular fee, adult (12 and over) | €90, charged as £80 | Embassy of Hungary, collected by VFS Global | At your appointment |
| Consular fee, child aged 6-11 | €45, charged as £40 | Embassy of Hungary, collected by VFS Global | At your appointment |
| Consular fee, child under 6 | Free | - | - |

Fees are not refunded if the visa is refused. Some applicants pay no consular fee, including family members of EU or EEA citizens (but not family members of Hungarian citizens), pupils, students and accompanying teachers travelling for study, and researchers; the VFS service charge still applies. Our Schengen visa fee guide compares countries.
The Embassy decides within 15 calendar days of accepting your application, extendable to 45 days in individual cases, for example if it needs more checks or documents. VFS says the 15 days start when the application reaches the Embassy: the next working day from London, or after three working days from Manchester or Edinburgh.
You can apply up to 6 months before travel and no later than 15 calendar days before; the Embassy may return late applications without a decision. In peak months the wait for a slot can be longer than the decision itself. VFS keeps your passport while the application is processed, so plan other travel around it. Our processing times guide explains the rules in detail.
| Time before travel | What to do |
|---|---|
| 6 months to 10 weeks | Fix dates, check passport and UK status validity, ask your host for their invitation and documents |
| 10 to 8 weeks | Complete the form, book VFS, sort out travel and accommodation bookings |
| 8 to 4 weeks | Gather documents, generate your eVisa share code, attend the appointment |
| 4 to 2 weeks | Decision expected; collect your passport or receive it by courier |
| Under 15 days | Too late to apply; move your trip |
Most UK residents apply for a short-stay (type C) Schengen visa for tourism, a family visit, business or treatment. The purpose you choose changes the evidence the Embassy expects.
Tourist. Accommodation bookings for every night and a simple day-by-day plan; Hungary’s foreign ministry refers to a prepaid accommodation reservation for individual tourist trips. Budapest is often paired with Vienna, Prague or Bratislava, so Hungary must be your main destination: usually where you spend the most nights, or where you first enter Schengen if no main destination can be determined. Our guide on which country to apply to covers edge cases.
Family or friend visit. Your host’s signed invitation, their ID documents and evidence of your relationship. See our family visit visa guide.
Business. An invitation from your Hungarian business partner naming you, the purpose, the dates and who pays, proof of the business relationship, plus a letter from your UK employer. See our business visa guide.
Medical treatment. Budapest is a major centre for dental care. If treatment is the main purpose, apply as a medical visit with the receiving clinic’s certificate showing the treatment is paid for or covered, and proof of where you will stay. Allow for follow-up appointments within your visa dates.
Events and short courses. An invitation from the event organiser, a contract or accreditation for athletes and performers, or a certificate from the receiving institution for courses of up to 90 days.
Long stays. Work, study or family stays over 90 days need a Hungarian national (type D) visa or residence permit, which follows a different procedure; a Schengen visa cannot be extended into one.
Holidays and city breaks in Budapest, Lake Balaton, the wine regions and elsewhere in Hungary, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Staying with relatives or friends in Hungary, supported by a signed invitation from your host, a copy of their passport or residence permit and both sides of their address card.
Meetings, trade fairs, conferences and client visits, with an invitation from the Hungarian business partner and a letter from your UK employer.
Courses or training of 90 days or less, with a certificate from the receiving Hungarian institution. Pupils, students and accompanying teachers travelling for study are exempt from the visa fee.
Planned treatment, including dental care in Budapest, with a certificate from the Hungarian clinic confirming the treatment and how it will be paid for.
Festivals, concerts, sporting events or competitions, with an invitation from the organiser, a contract or proof of accreditation.
Free visa for non-EU family members travelling with or joining an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen. Family members of Hungarian citizens are excluded: they apply under the general procedure and pay the full fee.
These are the points where Hungary files from the UK most often go wrong.
Tip: VFS asks for supporting documents no older than 1 month, so ask your host and employer for their letters close to your appointment date rather than months in advance.
Most Hungary refusals come down to avoidable gaps in evidence. Fix these before you apply:
If you are refused, the standard refusal form ticks the reasons and states how to challenge the decision. Hungary’s appeal window is short: a signed, written appeal lodged in person, by you or someone holding your power of attorney, at the Embassy’s consular section in London within 8 days of receiving the refusal, with an appointment booked by email at [email protected]. It must be in Hungarian or another official EU language, or come with an official translation. The fee is £141 (the Embassy’s sterling rate from 1 January 2026), paid by debit card or postal order and never refunded. The foreign ministry’s consular department decides within 15 days, and its decision can be reviewed by the courts. If the problem was missing evidence, a fresh application that addresses each reason, with a new visa fee, is often faster. Our guide to a refused Schengen visa explains both routes.

Inside the rules
Appointments are booked officially, in your own name. No bots, no shared accounts, no shortcuts.

Our country guides are checked against official consulate and visa centre sources and dated.
We provide administrative help with Schengen visa paperwork. We do not give UK immigration advice, and the Hungary consulate makes every decision.
How appointments work
Your appointment with VFS Global is free to book and is made by you, in your own name, on the official booking site. Dates, availability and the visa decision are entirely in the hands of the centre and the consulate. We do the part that is in your hands: a complete, consistent, well-evidenced application.
What we do
What is not in our hands
Whether you need a visa for Hungary depends on your passport, not your UK residence. British, Irish and EU citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180. If you live in the UK on a passport that is not visa-exempt, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian or Chinese, you need a Schengen visa even with settled status or a work visa.
Yes, you can apply for a Hungary visa at any UK centre. The Embassy of Hungary in London decides every application and lists all three VFS Global centres, so you can submit in London, Manchester or Edinburgh wherever you live. VFS says files lodged in Manchester or Edinburgh reach the Embassy after three working days, against the next working day from London, so allow about 2 extra working days.
Book online on the VFS Global Hungary UK website: create an account, add each applicant with details exactly as in their passport, choose London, Manchester or Edinburgh and pick a date. The booking is free and always in your own name, and every applicant, including children, attends in person. Optional extras are sold by VFS and are not required. Nobody can legitimately sell you a VFS slot.
The Hungary visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11; under-6s pay nothing. The Embassy of Hungary in London charges it in sterling: £80 for adults and £40 for children, valid from 1 January 2026. VFS Global adds its own service charge per application (its Hungary UK page lists £25; check the live amount), and optional extras cost more. Fees are not refunded if the visa is refused. Our admin support fee is quoted separately.
The Embassy decides a Hungary visa within 15 calendar days of accepting your application, extendable to 45 in individual cases if it needs more checks or documents. VFS says the clock starts when the application reaches the Embassy, which takes about 2 extra working days from Manchester or Edinburgh. Apply 6 to 8 weeks before travel if you can, and earlier for Easter, summer and Christmas.
Yes, you can apply for a Hungary visa with an eVisa share code. BRPs have expired, so UK status is proved with a UKVI eVisa. Generate a share code on GOV.UK's View and prove your immigration status service; it lasts 90 days. Print the status page with the code and bring it to VFS. The Embassy asks for UK residence valid at least 1 month beyond your departure from the Schengen area.
If you stay with family or friends in Hungary, VFS's checklist asks for a recent invitation letter from your host, signed and dated, with a copy of their passport or residence permit photo page, copies of both sides of their Hungarian address card and proof of your relationship. VFS also refers to an official sponsorship form your host can provide instead; ask your host to check the current procedure in Hungary.
There is no fixed bank balance for UK applicants to Hungary. VFS asks for your latest 3 months of UK bank statements showing your name, address and a closing balance from the last month, enough to cover your stay and the journey home. In practice they should show regular income and no unexplained large deposits just before you apply.
Apply to Hungary or Austria, whichever is where you spend the most nights. Four nights in Budapest and three in Vienna means a Hungary application; the reverse means Austria. If no main destination can be determined, apply to the country whose external border you cross first to enter the Schengen area. The same rule applies to Prague, Bratislava or Ljubljana.
There is no separate Hungarian medical visa, but you should apply for a short-stay Schengen visa with medical treatment as the purpose if treatment is the main reason for the trip. Hungary's foreign ministry asks for a certificate from the receiving clinic showing the cost of treatment is covered, plus proof of where you will stay.
Yes, you can appeal a Hungary visa refusal, but quickly. A signed written appeal must be lodged in person, by you or someone holding your power of attorney, at the Embassy's consular section in London within 8 days of receiving the refusal; book by email at [email protected]. The fee is £141 and is never refunded. The foreign ministry decides within 15 days. A fresh application that fixes the reasons is also possible at any time.
No, a Hungary visa does not cover Serbia or Ukraine. Both are outside the Schengen area and have their own entry rules. Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Romania are full Schengen members, so a Hungary visa covers them. If you leave Schengen and want to come back, you need a multiple-entry visa, and each exit and re-entry is recorded by the Entry/Exit System.
