Can you apply for a Schengen visa in Edinburgh?
Yes. 25 of the 29 Schengen countries accept short-stay visa applications in Edinburgh, through four commercial providers: VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International and GVCW. Only four have no Edinburgh option: the Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Poland take applications in London alone, and Romania at its consulates in London or, for parts of northern England, Manchester.
This matters most to UK residents in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England who need a visa, typically non-EU nationals living in the UK. British citizens do not need a Schengen visa for short stays. You still apply to one country only, your main destination (where you will spend the longest time), so check which country to apply to before you look at Edinburgh calendars.
Edinburgh is a smaller centre than London, which often means a shorter journey and sometimes earlier slots. The trade-off is that, for most countries, your passport is couriered to London for the decision, adding a few days.
Which Schengen countries take applications in Edinburgh?
The table below shows every country with an Edinburgh option, who runs it, who decides and who may use it, as checked in October 2026.
| Country | Provider | Who decides an Edinburgh file | Who can submit in Edinburgh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | BLS International | Consulate General of Spain, Edinburgh | Residents of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Tees Valley |
| Germany | TLScontact | Consulate General of Germany, Edinburgh | Residents of Scotland only |
| Italy | VFS Global | Consulate General of Italy, London | Residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland, who are directed here by the Edinburgh consulate |
| Portugal | VFS Global | Consulate of Portugal, Manchester | Residents of the Manchester consulate’s counties only (VFS publishes the list) |
| France | TLScontact | Consulate General of France, London | Any UK resident |
| Greece | GVCW | Embassy of Greece (Consular Office), London | GVCW asks you to select the centre for your residence address; no postcode list is published, so call GVCW before choosing a different centre |
| Belgium | TLScontact | Embassy of Belgium, London | Any UK resident |
| Slovakia | BLS International | Embassy of Slovakia, London | Any UK resident |
| Sweden | VFS Global | Swedish Migration Agency | Any UK resident |
| Norway | VFS Global | Embassy of Norway, London | Any UK resident |
| Switzerland and Liechtenstein | VFS Global | Embassy of Switzerland, London | Any UK resident |
| Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Slovenia | VFS Global | The country’s embassy or authorities via London | Any UK resident |
For the 13 VFS countries in the last row, the country pages explain any local detail, for example Denmark, where you apply and pay on ApplyVisa before booking, and Croatia, where the online form on crovisa.mvep.hr comes first.
Note: Several Schengen countries have honorary consuls in Scotland. Honorary consuls do not take short-stay visa applications or biometrics; you submit at the official visa centre.
Where are the Edinburgh visa centres?
Edinburgh’s visa centres are split between Leith, about 3 km north of Princes Street, and the city centre. The addresses below come from official mission or provider pages, but always use the address on your appointment confirmation, because providers relocate and VFS publishes its address per client country.
| Provider | Address | Countries | Where the address is published |
|---|---|---|---|
| BLS International | 6 Dock Place, Suite 1A (first floor), Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6LU; submissions 08:30-12:30, Monday to Friday | Spain, Slovakia | Spanish Consulate General Edinburgh checklists; BLS Slovakia UK contact page |
| TLScontact | Argyle House, 3 Lady Lawson Street, Edinburgh (postcode given as EH3 9DS by France-Visas and EH3 9DR by TLScontact and the Belgian Embassy) | France, Belgium | France-Visas UK page; Belgian Embassy UK; submission by appointment, weekdays |
| TLScontact | Shown on your booking confirmation | Germany | TLScontact Germany UK site; the German missions publish no street address |
| VFS Global | 1 Rennie’s Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT (Joint Visa Application Centre) | Italy, Portugal, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the other VFS countries | Listed by the Austrian, Italian, Hungarian and Norwegian missions; confirm on the country’s VFS “attend centre” page |
| GVCW | 1 Rennie’s Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT; 09:00-14:00, Monday to Friday | Greece | GVCW UK site; passports returned by courier only |
Spain and Slovakia share the same BLS centre in Leith; bring the checklist for the country you are applying to. VFS and GVCW list the same Leith building, but they are separate operations with separate bookings.
The tram runs from Edinburgh Airport through the city centre to Leith, so applicants flying in from Belfast, Aberdeen or Inverness can reach both areas without a taxi. If you are travelling from the Highlands, Orkney, Shetland or the Western Isles, check the centre’s submission hours, which are often weekday mornings or daytime only, and consider arriving the night before.
Which consulates in Edinburgh decide Schengen visas?
Two countries decide applications in Edinburgh itself: Germany and Spain. Italy has a Consulate General in Edinburgh, but it confirms that visa decisions for the whole UK are made in London. Every other country sends Edinburgh files elsewhere, usually to its embassy in London.
- Germany. The Consulate General in Edinburgh is responsible for residents of Scotland only. Residents of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, belong to the Embassy in London and use TLScontact London or Manchester; older guides that say otherwise are out of date. Since 1 June 2026, TLScontact London and Manchester allocate appointments from a queue; the notice does not name Edinburgh, so follow what the Edinburgh booking page shows when you register.
- Italy. The Consulate General in Edinburgh says all UK visa services are provided by the Consulate General in London, and that residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland book at the Edinburgh VFS centre. Appointments are managed only by VFS Global: follow the booking route on the VFS Italy UK site (which may direct you to its Italy Global app), then attend VFS in Leith. Your file is decided in London, so allow courier time.
- Spain. The Consulate General in Edinburgh covers Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cumbria, County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley. If you live there, you book through BLS Edinburgh, not London.
Because these two decide locally, your passport does not need to travel to London and back. For the other 23 countries, the Edinburgh centre is a collection point: it takes your documents and biometrics and couriers the file to the deciding mission.
Do you have to live in Scotland to apply in Edinburgh?
Not for most countries. France has no regional jurisdiction in the UK, and most VFS Global countries accept any lawful UK resident at any of their centres. The exceptions are the countries that split the UK into consular areas:
| Country | If you live in Scotland | If you live in Northern Ireland | If you live in northern England |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Must use Edinburgh | London or Manchester | London or Manchester |
| Italy | Edinburgh (decided in London) | Edinburgh (decided in London) | London or Manchester |
| Spain | Edinburgh | Edinburgh | Edinburgh for Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Tees Valley; Manchester for the rest of the north |
| Portugal | Edinburgh or Manchester | Edinburgh or Manchester | Edinburgh or Manchester |
If your county falls under the Consulate General of Portugal in London (broadly London, the South and the East of England), you must use VFS London; VFS publishes both county lists. Submitting in the wrong area can lead to your application being returned or rejected as inadmissible, so bring proof of address that matches the centre you book, such as a council tax bill or recent bank statement.
Tip: For countries with no regional rule, Edinburgh can be worth checking from Newcastle, Carlisle or Belfast when Manchester or London calendars are full. Compare the cost of travel with the extra courier days before you switch.
How long does it take when you apply in Edinburgh?
The decision usually takes up to 15 calendar days and can be extended to 45, wherever you submit. Edinburgh adds courier time only when the file is decided in another city.
| Situation | Extra time compared with London |
|---|---|
| Germany, Spain (decided in Edinburgh) | None for Scottish-area files |
| Most VFS Global countries, including Italy, Sweden and Norway | About 2 days |
| Portugal (files go to Manchester first) | About 2 days |
| Greece (GVCW) | About 5 days |
| France, Belgium (TLScontact) | A few extra days for transport to London |
You can apply up to 6 months before travel and no later than 15 calendar days before. From Edinburgh, aim for at least 4-6 weeks before departure outside peak season, and earlier before Easter, July and August, and Christmas. Our processing time guide explains what else affects timing.
How do you book a Schengen appointment in Edinburgh?
You book on the official system of the country you are applying to, in your own name, and the booking is free.
- Complete any online form the country requires first, for example France-Visas for France, ApplyVisa for Denmark and crovisa.mvep.hr for Croatia.
- Create an account with the provider, using your own email address (for Italy, follow the booking route on the VFS Italy UK site, which may direct you to its Italy Global app).
- Select Edinburgh as the centre, and the short-stay category that matches your trip.
- Enter details exactly as in your passport, then choose a date and time. For France, since 11 September 2026, TLScontact Edinburgh no longer shows a calendar: you register, wait in a queue and have 12 hours to pay the service fee and confirm when an appointment is emailed to you. Germany’s waiting-list notice names only London and Manchester, so follow what the Edinburgh booking page shows.
- Save the confirmation and bring a printed copy.
- Book travel to Edinburgh after the slot is confirmed, choosing flexible fares, since slots can be rescheduled.
Important: Schengen Visa Support does not book, hold or supply visa appointments, and nobody can legitimately sell you an Edinburgh slot. We help you understand the official system and complete the booking in your own name. See our UK appointment guide for how each provider works.
What happens at the Edinburgh centre?
Arrive a few minutes before your slot with your confirmation, passport, originals and copies. You go through an airport-style security check, hand over your file, pay the fees, and give fingerprints and a photograph unless your fingerprints were taken for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months. The centre keeps your passport until the decision. Bring a card: several VFS country pages (Portugal, Malta, Austria, Latvia, Norway) say cash is accepted only in London, and GVCW returns Edinburgh passports by courier, a paid extra.
Bring proof of your UK status. Non-British residents now use a UKVI eVisa and share code rather than a BRP; our eVisa share code guide explains what to print. How long your UK permission must run beyond the trip varies by country: many missions ask for at least 1 month after you leave the Schengen area, while others, such as Italy, Finland, Iceland and Lithuania, want 3 months or 90 days, and Spain’s Edinburgh consulate asks for 30 days. Planning for 3 months covers all of them.
How much does it cost to apply in Edinburgh?
The visa fee is the same in every UK city: €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11, and free under 6, collected in sterling at a rate each consulate sets (around £80 for an adult). The provider’s service charge is set per country, not per city.
| Fee | Amount | Paid to | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa fee | €90 adult, €45 child 6-11, free under 6 | The consulate, via the centre | At or before the appointment |
| Provider service charge | Set per country; for example VFS charges £32.85 including VAT for Portugal | VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International or GVCW | When you book or at the centre |
| Optional extras (courier return, SMS) | Set by each provider | The provider | Optional |
| Our admin support fee | Quoted separately | Schengen Visa Support | See pricing |
Charges change often, so check the live amount before you pay. Our fee guide covers every country.
How do you get your Edinburgh application ready?
The biggest risk with a trip to Leith is arriving with a gap in your file, especially if you have flown in from Belfast or travelled down from the Highlands. Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service: we prepare a personal checklist, complete the form, review your documents and explain the official booking steps, while the consulate makes every decision. See how it works or our pricing.
