Schengen Visa Manchester: Which Countries, Where and How Far Ahead to Book

By Schengen Visa Support visa admin team Published Updated 11 min read Fact-checked

Quick answer

23 of the 29 Schengen countries accept visa applications in Manchester: 22 through four providers, VFS Global (17 countries), TLScontact (Belgium, France, Germany), BLS International (Spain) and GVCW (Greece), plus Romania at its own Consulate General. Booking is free and in your own name. Most files are couriered to London, adding about 2 to 5 days, so book 6 to 8 weeks before travel.

Which Schengen countries take visa applications in Manchester?

Twenty-three of the 29 Schengen countries accept short-stay visa applications in Manchester: 22 through four commercial providers, and Romania directly at its Consulate General in the city. VFS Global handles 17 of them, TLScontact handles three, BLS International handles Spain and GVCW handles Greece.

Provider Countries you can apply for in Manchester Where the file is decided
VFS Global Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland Usually the mission in London (Portugal: the Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester, for its own counties)
TLScontact Belgium, France, Germany Missions in London (Belgium: sometimes the Immigration Office in Brussels)
BLS International Spain Consulate General of Spain, Manchester
GVCW Greece Embassy of Greece, Consular Office, London
No provider (consulate direct) Romania Consulate General of Romania, Manchester, for the North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber (check its current list if you live in the Midlands)

Six countries have no Manchester visa intake:

Country Where to apply instead
Czech Republic VFS Global London only
Luxembourg Embassy in London, appointment by email
Norway VFS Global London or Edinburgh
Poland Embassy in London (10 Bouverie Street), booked on e-Konsulat
Slovakia BLS International London or Edinburgh
Sweden VFS Global London or Edinburgh

You do not choose the country by which centre is convenient: you apply to your main destination, meaning where you spend the most nights, or your first point of entry if the nights are equal. Our guide to which country to apply to explains the rule. If that country is one of the six above, Manchester is not an option.

Where are the Schengen visa centres in Manchester?

There is no single Schengen building in Manchester: each provider runs its own centre, so the address depends on the country you apply to. Always use the address printed on your booking confirmation, because centres do move and third-party websites often list old or wrong addresses.

Provider Countries Where to find the address Notes
VFS Global The 17 VFS countries, including Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and the Netherlands 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH, as the Austrian, Hungarian and Italian missions list their VFS centre; confirm on the country’s VFS UK page and your confirmation Book through the country’s own VFS UK page, not a generic VFS link; the confirmation names the centre
TLScontact (France, Belgium) France, Belgium 1 Portland Street, Manchester M1 3BE (listed by France-Visas and the Belgian Embassy) Submission by appointment only; each country has its own TLScontact site
TLScontact (Germany) Germany Your TLScontact confirmation The German missions do not publish a street address; use the TLScontact Germany UK site
BLS International Spain Unit 1, 205 Chapel Street, Salford M3 5PF, as listed by BLS; submissions 08:30-13:30 Just across the River Irwell from the city centre; BLS forwards files to the Consulate General of Spain in Manchester
GVCW Greece 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH, as listed by GVCW; 09:00-14:00, Monday to Friday Separate booking from VFS and TLScontact; passports are returned by courier only
Consulate General of Romania Romania The consulate’s own site (manchester.mae.ro) and your e-Viza appointment confirmation Appointment only through the Foreign Ministry’s e-Viza portal; no visa centre and no service charge

Note: The visa centre is not the consulate. Spain, Italy and Portugal all have consulates in Manchester, but short-stay visa applications are lodged at the provider’s centre, so go to the address on your confirmation, not to the consulate. Romania is the exception: there is no visa centre, and you apply at the Consulate General itself.

If you are travelling in by train, check how far your centre is from Piccadilly or Victoria and choose a late-morning slot, so a delayed train does not cost you the appointment.

Who has to use Manchester, and who can choose?

For most countries Manchester is optional: any UK resident can use it. For Spain, Portugal and Romania your home address decides, for Germany and Italy it narrows your choice, and Greece asks you to pick the centre for your residence address. Book the wrong centre for these and your application may not be accepted.

Country Who applies in Manchester Who cannot
Spain Must apply here if you live in Wales, the Isle of Man, North West England (except Cumbria), Yorkshire and the Humber, or the East or West Midlands London, the South and East of England (London centre); Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and the Tees Valley (Edinburgh)
Portugal Residents of counties in the Manchester consulate’s district, at Manchester or Edinburgh Residents of counties in the London consulate’s district, who must use VFS London
Germany Anyone in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, at London or Manchester Scotland residents, who apply in Edinburgh
Italy Residents of the London consulate’s district (England, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar), at Manchester or London; the Consulate General in London decides every UK file Scotland and Northern Ireland residents, who are directed to the Edinburgh centre (still decided in London)
Romania Residents of the North West, the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber, at the Consulate General in Manchester (check its current list if you live in the Midlands) Everyone else, who applies at the Consulate General in London
Greece GVCW asks you to select the centre for your residence address; no postcode list is published, so call GVCW before booking a different centre -
All other 17 Manchester countries Any UK resident Nobody: there is no regional jurisdiction

Spain trips more people up than any other country. Birmingham and the whole Midlands belong to Manchester, not London, while Cumbria and the North East belong to Edinburgh. Bring proof of address, such as a council tax bill or tenancy agreement, that matches the centre you book.

Portugal splits the UK by county between its Consulate General in London and its Consulate in Manchester. Find your county on the VFS Portugal UK list before you book, and if your area is not clearly named, ask VFS before paying for anything.

How do you book a Schengen visa appointment in Manchester?

You book on the official system of the country you are applying to, in your own name, and booking is free. Several countries make you complete an online form before the booking calendar opens, so do that step first.

  1. Confirm the country using the main-destination rule, and check whether it uses Manchester at all.
  2. Complete any national pre-registration. France uses France-Visas, Belgium uses Visa On Web, Denmark uses ApplyVisa (where you also pay the visa fee) and Croatia uses the Crovisa form.
  3. Create your account on the provider’s site with your own email address: VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International or GVCW.
  4. Choose Manchester, the short-stay visa type and the number of applicants. Each family member needs a place, children included.
  5. Pick a date, or wait for one to be allocated if you are applying for Germany or France (see below).
  6. Print the confirmation, which you show at the door.

Three countries do things differently:

  • Germany: since 1 June 2026, TLScontact London and Manchester no longer let short-stay applicants pick a date. You register on the waiting list, are allocated a slot first come, first served, then have 24 hours to pay TLScontact’s service fee and confirm it or the appointment is cancelled. Watch your inbox, including spam.
  • France: since 1 August 2026, TLScontact London and Manchester also allocate short-stay appointments automatically. You complete France-Visas, register on the TLScontact France UK site, wait in a queue and then have 12 hours to pay the service fee and confirm when an appointment is emailed to you. If nothing is allocated within 60 days your registration is deleted and you start again.
  • Italy: the consulate says appointments are managed only by VFS Global. Follow the booking route on the VFS Italy UK site; if it directs you to the Italy Global mobile app, download it only through the link on the VFS page. You still attend the Manchester centre in person.

Important: Schengen Visa Support does not book, hold or supply visa appointments, and nobody can legitimately sell you one. We explain how each official system works, help you complete the booking in your own name and help prepare your file for the day.

Our UK-wide appointment guide covers the rules on rescheduling, duplicate bookings and agents who claim to sell slots.

How far ahead should you book in Manchester?

Book as soon as your travel dates are firm, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before you fly. The rules let you apply up to 6 months before travel and no later than 15 calendar days before, and the decision itself takes 15 calendar days as standard, extendable to 45.

Manchester can be easier to book than London, but it serves a very large area: Spain’s Manchester district alone runs from Anglesey to Lincolnshire. Demand rises sharply before Easter, in the run-up to July and August, and before Christmas.

Weeks before travel What to do
12 to 10 Confirm your main destination, check passport validity and your UK status, start gathering documents
10 to 8 Complete any national form (France-Visas, Visa On Web, ApplyVisa, Crovisa); open your provider account and book Manchester; for Germany and France, register and watch your email for an allocated appointment
8 to 6 Attend your appointment with a complete file
6 to 3 Decision window: 15 calendar days plus courier time to and from London
3 to 2 Passport back; book non-refundable travel only now
Under 2 Too late: applications must be lodged at least 15 calendar days before travel

For summer trips, start this timeline in March or April rather than May.

Is it slower to apply in Manchester than in London?

Usually a little, because most Schengen embassies decide in London and your file has to travel there. Spain, Portugal and Romania are the exceptions, because their Manchester consulates decide locally.

Country or provider Extra time from Manchester Why
VFS Global countries (except Portugal) About 2 days File couriered to the deciding mission in London
Greece (GVCW) About 5 days GVCW’s stated courier time to London
France, Belgium, Germany (TLScontact) Usually a few days File and passport travel to the mission in London
Spain (BLS) None, but BLS warns of 6 to 8 weeks for a decision from Manchester at busy times (at least 4 weeks in London) Consulate General of Spain in Manchester decides
Portugal (VFS) None for the Manchester district Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester decides
Romania (consulate direct) None for its northern counties Consulate General of Romania in Manchester decides

If Manchester offers a slot weeks before London, a few courier days rarely outweigh it. Our processing time guide explains what else affects the clock.

What does it cost to apply in Manchester?

The fees are the same as in London. The Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11 and free under 6, paid in pounds at the rate each consulate sets (around £80 for adults). On top of that, the provider adds its own service charge, which differs by country and changes often.

Fee Amount Paid to
Visa fee, adult (12+) €90 (around £80, set by each consulate) The consulate, collected at the centre
Visa fee, child 6 to 11 €45 The consulate, collected at the centre
Visa fee, under 6 Free -
Spain service charge (BLS) £14.85 including VAT, per application BLS International
Other providers’ service charges Varies by country: check the provider’s live price list VFS Global, TLScontact or GVCW
Optional extras Varies The provider

Optional extras such as Premium Lounge, SMS updates and courier return of your passport are sold by the provider. None of them affects the decision or its speed. Bring a card: several VFS country pages (Portugal, Malta, Austria and Latvia among them) say cash is accepted only in London, and GVCW returns Manchester passports by courier, which is a paid extra. Our Schengen visa fee guide breaks down the full cost.

What happens at a Manchester appointment?

The day follows the same pattern at every provider. Arrive a little before your slot with your printed confirmation, passport and full file of originals and copies, then go through airport-style security. Large bags are usually refused, so do not bring luggage.

At the counter, staff check your documents, collect the visa fee and service charge, and take fingerprints and a digital photo. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints, and if you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months they can sometimes be reused. The centre keeps your passport until the decision, so do not plan other international travel in that window.

Non-British residents prove UK status with a UKVI eVisa and share code, not a BRP. How long your UK permission must run beyond the trip varies by country: many missions ask for at least 1 month after you leave the Schengen area, while others, such as Italy, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania and Spain’s Manchester consulate, want 3 months or 90 days, so planning for 3 months covers all of them. Our eVisa share code guide explains what to bring, and the Schengen visa documents checklist covers the rest of the file.

Are there alternatives to Manchester in the North and Midlands?

Manchester is the only Schengen hub in the North of England. There are no Schengen visa centres in Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle or Sheffield. Depending on the country, these are the realistic alternatives:

  • Birmingham (Smethwick): VFS’s joint centre moved on 27 July 2026 to 2nd Floor, 5-14 South Road, Smethwick B67 7BN. It takes applications for the Netherlands and Estonia.
  • Cardiff: VFS lists Estonia and Lithuania there. It has also listed Iceland, but Icelandic official pages name only London, Manchester and Edinburgh, so check the VFS Iceland UK site before booking Cardiff.
  • Edinburgh: an option for most Manchester countries, and the only alternative to London for Norway, Sweden and Slovakia. Portugal treats Edinburgh as part of its Manchester jurisdiction.
  • London: always available for countries without regional jurisdiction, and the only choice for the Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Poland, and for Romania if you live outside its Manchester consulate’s area.

If you are deciding between centres for France or Switzerland, pick the one with the earliest date you can reliably reach, then add the courier days.

Frequently asked questions

Which Schengen countries can I apply for in Manchester?

23 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland through a visa centre, plus Romania directly at its Consulate General in Manchester if you live in its area. The Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Slovakia and Sweden have no Manchester intake, so applicants for those countries go to London or, for Norway, Slovakia and Sweden, Edinburgh.

Can I apply in Manchester if I live in London?

For most countries, yes: France, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the other countries with no regional jurisdiction accept any UK resident at any centre. Spain, Portugal and Romania do not. If you live in London or the South East, Spain sends you to BLS London, Portugal sends London-district counties to VFS London, and Romania's Manchester consulate covers only its northern counties. Greece asks you to choose the centre for your residence address. A file lodged at the wrong centre may not be accepted.

Is the Spain visa centre in Manchester the same as the Spanish consulate?

No. You submit your application and biometrics at BLS International's Manchester centre, a private provider, which BLS lists at Unit 1, 205 Chapel Street, Salford M3 5PF (use the address on your booking confirmation). BLS forwards files to the Consulate General of Spain in Manchester, which makes the decision. Do not go to the consulate itself. Residents of Wales, the Isle of Man, the Midlands, Yorkshire and North West England (except Cumbria) must apply in Manchester.

Is a Schengen visa slower if I apply in Manchester?

Usually slightly. For most countries the deciding embassy is in London, so your file and passport are couriered there and back. VFS puts this at about 2 extra days and GVCW at about 5 for Greece. Spain, Portugal and Romania are the exceptions: their Manchester consulates decide files locally, although BLS warns that Spain decisions from Manchester can take 6 to 8 weeks at busy times. The legal decision time is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45.

How far ahead should I book a Schengen appointment in Manchester?

Aim for 6 to 8 weeks before travel, and earlier for Easter, July and August, or Christmas. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip and no later than 15 calendar days before it. Manchester can have earlier dates than London, but it serves a huge area from Anglesey to Lincolnshire, so do not assume it will be empty.
