Do Pakistani nationals living in the UK need a Schengen visa?
Yes. Every Pakistani passport holder needs a short-stay Schengen visa to visit any of the 29 Schengen countries, whatever their UK status. That includes Indefinite Leave to Remain, settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, spouse and family visas, Skilled Worker and Health and Care visas, Graduate visas, students and their dependants.
Living in the UK does not exempt you, but it does let you apply here rather than in Pakistan, provided your UK permission runs well beyond the trip. Plan on at least three months after your return; some countries set their own rule, and our guide to UK visa validity for a Schengen visa explains the differences. If you are in the UK only on a Standard Visitor visa, you are normally expected to apply in Pakistan instead; see applying on a UK visitor visa.
Two points cause confusion. Dual British and Pakistani nationals do not need a visa if they travel on the British passport. And ETIAS, the €20 travel authorisation still without a launch date, is for visa-exempt travellers such as British citizens; it will not replace a visa for Pakistani passport holders.
Which country do you apply to, and where in the UK?
You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or, if stays are equal, the country you enter first. Each country then uses its own provider and centres in the UK, and some decide which centre you use by your home address. Our guide to which country to apply to covers multi-country trips.
| Country | UK provider | UK cities | Notable point for Pakistani applicants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | BLS International | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Jurisdiction by address: Manchester covers the Midlands, Yorkshire (Bradford, Leeds) and Wales; fixed funds of €122.10 a day |
| France | TLScontact | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | No regional jurisdiction. Any centre, but since 1 August 2026 (London, Manchester) and 11 September 2026 (Edinburgh) TLScontact allocates appointments from a queue and you have 12 hours to pay and confirm |
| Italy | VFS Global | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Appointments only through VFS (which may direct you to its Italy Global app); marriage certificates must be under 6 months old |
| Germany | TLScontact | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Since 1 June 2026, London and Manchester slots are allocated from a queue; Scotland is decided in Edinburgh |
| Netherlands | VFS Global | London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham (Smethwick) | The only one of these with a Birmingham-area centre, which moved to Smethwick on 27 July 2026 |
| Greece | GVCW | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Prior-consultation nationalities should allow at least 3 weeks; Manchester and Edinburgh add about 5 days |
| Portugal | VFS Global | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Jurisdiction by county: the West Midlands belongs to Manchester; proof of address may be checked |
| Switzerland | VFS Global | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Embassy checklists quote about 5 working days (its visa page says up to 15); prior-consultation nationalities usually wait up to 14 working days |
| Belgium | TLScontact | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | Visa On Web form first; some files go to the Immigration Office in Brussels, which adds time (the legal limit is 45 days) |
The process is the same everywhere:
- Confirm your main destination and check that your passport and UK permission are valid long enough.
- Create an account on the official booking system for that country and book the appointment in your own name. Booking is free; extras such as premium lounges are optional and sold by the provider.
- Complete the application form (some countries, such as Croatia, Denmark and the Netherlands, use an online form first).
- Gather documents, translations and funds evidence, and write a short cover letter.
- Attend the centre to submit originals and give fingerprints (applicants aged 12 and over, unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months), then wait for the decision.
Important: We do not book, hold or supply visa appointments. Every provider books appointments in the applicant’s own name on its official system, and several warn against agents who sell slots. We explain how the system works and help you complete the booking yourself.
Why can a Pakistani application take longer?
Pakistan is on the EU’s prior-consultation list (Annex 16 of the Visa Code Handbook). Under Article 22 of the Visa Code, at least one Schengen state has asked to be consulted before a visa is issued to Pakistani nationals, and consulted states have seven calendar days to respond. Nothing is wrong with your file; it is simply an extra step.
In practice, UK consulates build this into their timings. Greece tells prior-consultation nationalities to allow at least three weeks, Portugal says more than three weeks, and Switzerland says prior-consultation nationalities usually wait up to 14 working days, against the roughly five working days its checklists quote for other applicants. The legal maximum everywhere is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 3 to 6 months before travel | Check passport and UK permission; renew if close to expiry |
| 8 to 10 weeks before | Book the appointment (earlier for Easter, summer and Eid holidays) |
| 6 to 8 weeks before | Attend the appointment with a complete file |
| No later than 15 calendar days before | The legal last date to apply, but too late to be safe with prior consultation |

Which documents do Pakistani applicants most often get wrong?
The core list is the same for everyone and appears on each country page, for example the Spain visa document checklist. These are the areas where Pakistani files most often fall short.
UK status and passport
Prove your status with your UKVI eVisa: generate a share code on GOV.UK (it lasts 90 days) and print the status page showing your permission and its end date. If you renewed your Pakistani passport recently, update your UKVI account first, because an eVisa still linked to the old passport number is a common reason for delays at the centre. Our eVisa share code guide shows how.
Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area and have two blank pages. Bring old passports too: previous Schengen, UK, US, Canadian, Gulf or Turkish visas used correctly are good evidence that you return home on time.
Names
Names are often spelled differently across a Pakistani passport, a NADRA card, a Nikah Nama and UK bank records, for example Muhammad and Mohammed, or a married woman listed with her husband’s name on one document and her father’s on another. Use the passport spelling on the form, bookings and insurance, and explain any difference in one line of your cover letter.
Family and civil documents
For family applications, sponsorship by a spouse or children’s visas, bring documents proving each relationship:
- Nikah Nama and the NADRA computerised marriage registration certificate, or a UK marriage certificate
- Children’s birth certificates (UK, or the NADRA computerised birth certificate if born in Pakistan)
- NADRA Family Registration Certificate where it helps link family members
Anything in Urdu needs a translation, normally a certified English translation. Some countries go further: Spain asks for a sworn translation and legalisation or apostille for documents issued outside the UK and EU, Italy asks for translation and legalisation, and Italy will not accept a marriage certificate older than six months. Pakistan joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 9 March 2023. The document usually has to be verified by the body that issued it before it can be apostilled or attested, so confirm the current route with the Pakistani authorities and allow several weeks if you are arranging it from the UK.
How much money do Pakistani applicants need to show?
Funds are where most Pakistani applications succeed or fail. A few countries publish fixed or reference amounts per person; others set no figure and judge whether your money comfortably covers the trip on top of normal UK outgoings.
| Country | Published funds guide |
|---|---|
| Spain | €122.10 per person per day, minimum €1,098.90 per person (2026) |
| France | €120 a day without accommodation, €65 with a hotel, €32.50 with a host |
| Belgium | About €95 a day in a hotel, about €45 with a private host |
| Netherlands | €55 per person per day if not sponsored |
| Portugal | €75 per entry plus €40 per day |
| Italy | Fixed table: €269.60 minimum for a solo trip of 1 to 5 days |
| Greece | At least £40 per day of stay in your UK current account, closing balance no older than 30 days (GVCW checklist) |
| Germany | No fixed figure; the officer assesses the whole picture |
What strong statements look like
- Three months of UK personal current account statements with your name, address and bank branding on every page
- Regular salary credits that match your payslips and employer letter
- Normal spending on rent or mortgage, bills and shopping, showing you live in the UK
- A savings account alongside, if you have one, as a buffer
What raises concerns
- Unexplained lump sums shortly before applying, including money moved in by relatives to make the balance look higher
- Committee (rotating savings) payouts that arrive as a single large credit with no explanation
- Heavy cash deposits without matching business records, which often affects takeaway, shop and private hire businesses
- Regular remittances to Pakistan that leave a thin balance; these are normal, but the remaining funds must still cover the trip
- A Pakistani bank account as the main evidence instead of UK accounts
If a genuine gift, loan or committee payout explains a deposit, say so in your cover letter and add evidence such as a signed letter from the giver with their statement. If you are self-employed, show the business is real and active: Companies House or sole-trader registration, your SA302 and HMRC tax year overview, business bank statements and, for private hire drivers, your council licence. Our bank statements guide and self-employed guide go further.
Visiting relatives in Europe: which host document do you need?
Many Pakistani families in the UK visit relatives in Spain, Italy, France, Germany or Belgium. If you stay in a private home, most countries expect an official host document, which the host obtains in their country and sends to you.
| Country | Host document |
|---|---|
| Spain | Carta de invitación issued by the Policía Nacional for the host’s address (the host pays the fee on form 790, code 012); a letter the host writes themselves is not enough |
| France | Attestation d’accueil from the host’s town hall |
| Italy | Dichiarazione di ospitalità signed by the host, with their ID or residence permit |
| Germany | Verpflichtungserklärung from the host’s Ausländerbehörde, original only, if the host covers costs |
| Belgium | Annex 3bis legalised at the host’s commune and presented within 6 months, if the host covers costs |
| Portugal | Termo de responsabilidade, certified or signed before the receiving officer |
| Netherlands | IND proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form, legalised at the municipality where the host is registered |
Slovakia is a special case. The Embassy of Slovakia’s London checklist says nationals of Pakistan (along with Bangladesh, Belarus, Iran, Morocco and Vietnam) must submit an invitation verified by the Slovak Foreign Police whatever the purpose of the trip. Your host applies in Slovakia, pays €50 per invited person, and the verified invitation is valid for 90 days from issue. See the Slovakia document checklist.
Add proof of your relationship, such as a NADRA Family Registration Certificate with a translation. Our invitation and sponsor letter guide explains each form.
Can Pakistani nationals in the UK get a multiple-entry visa?
Yes, but most first applications are issued for the trip dates only. Under the general Visa Code cascade, three visas used lawfully within two years normally lead to a one-year visa, then two years, then five. Commission decisions that adapt the cascade apply to applications made in a particular country, so applying in the UK, you follow the general rules. Schengen visas you held while living in Pakistan or the Gulf still count towards your history, provided you used them correctly. See our multiple-entry and cascade guide.
Why are Pakistani applicants refused?
Refusals use the standard Schengen grounds; nationality is not one of them. These come up most often:
| Refusal ground | Usual underlying cause |
|---|---|
| Insufficient means of subsistence | Balance too low per traveller, or recent deposits not explained |
| Purpose of stay not justified | Bookings, itinerary and cover letter do not match; private stay without the host document |
| Doubts about leaving before the visa expires | UK permission ending soon, unclear employment, thin evidence of UK life |
| Information not reliable | Undeclared previous refusal, inconsistent names or dates |
Declare every earlier refusal: they are recorded in the Visa Information System, and hiding one damages credibility far more than the refusal itself. Each country has its own appeal route and deadline, for example the Spain refusal and appeal options; our refused Schengen visa guide covers the choice between appealing and reapplying.
Schengen Visa Support is an independent UK visa admin support service. We help Pakistani nationals prepare files where the funds, family documents and cover letter tell one consistent story, and we review everything before your appointment. We cannot guarantee a visa or an appointment date. See how it works and our pricing.
